Eleanor Lambert The first event, the Costume Institute Gala (commonly known as the Met Gala), took place in 1948. It was advertised as a high society gathering to celebrate the opening of the newly founded Costume Institute’s annual exhibition.
But that vibe is a bit different now, thanks to the work of legendary Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who turned the event into the glamorous, celebrity-dressed soirée it is today, which sparks frantic Google searches every year to find the likes of Rihanna and the “best dressed” names.
What does the Met Gala raise money for?
And yet, while most people only focus on the designer clothes, this event is the only reason the Costume Institute can continue to thrive in the modern era. NBC News explain,
“The glamorous fundraising gala raises millions of dollars each year for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, home to the world’s most comprehensive costume collection.”
Proceeds from the Met Gala, at $75,000 per ticket this year, are the primary funding source for the institute, which exhibits, preserves and studies more than 33,000 objects spanning the history of fashion around the world.”
