Britain likes to believe that hair discrimination is an American problem. However, employment tribunals regularly hear cases relating to ‘standards of presentation’.
One recruitment consultant we spoke to said, “I’ve literally seen feedback that says, ‘Great candidate, but the hair might not be a good fit for the client’s environment.'” No one writes the word afro. There’s no need for that.
A World Afro Day 2023 survey found that many respondents felt pressured to change their hair for interviews. In corporate sectors such as finance and law, straight styles were perceived as safer.
The problem is plausible deniability. Policies rarely prohibit textures completely. They forbid volume, shape and visibility. Actually, it is intended for natural hair.
“Britain’s Equality Act protects race, but employers argue that grooming is brand neutral,” said lawyer Kemi Olaniyan. “The gray area is where bigotry thrives.”
Therefore, women adapt strategically. Braid your hair before the interview. Twist out after trial period. It’s not surrender. That’s risk management.
But professionalism doesn’t require translation.
Inclusion has not yet occurred when your natural state requires explanation. I just became more polite.
