Don’t use ambiguous language. We’ve seen what works.
Supacell didn’t just set a trend, it took it mainstream. It’s a South London superhero story rooted in our community, with a cast that actually looks like us. People weren’t just watching, they were talking about it, quoting it, arguing about it.
Then there’s “adolescence,” a grappling with youth, pressure, identity, and a quiet intensity that we instantly recognize. It’s not overly descriptive, it’s not diluted, it’s just real.
So here’s a question. If these things prove to be true, why do they feel like the exception rather than the norm?
Because the industry still treats them like experiments.
One hit show becomes a “proof of concept.” But instead of doubling down, delegating more, and building the foundation, everything slows down. Decision making becomes stagnant. The momentum wanes. And suddenly we were back to waiting again.
Viewers, on the other hand, aren’t going anywhere. We are here, monitoring and engaging. The numbers already prove it.
The problem is not demand. It’s a belief.
Until platforms stop treating Black British stories like risks and start treating them like investments, we will continue to have the same conversations year after year.
And let’s be honest, we’re running out of patience.
