I haven’t been roller skating in years! Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, skating was a weekly adventure for me and my friends. We were regulars at the American skating rink in Wickriff. My mother was the one who the enthusiastic skater himself taught me how to skate, and from that moment on I was hooked.
For many years, I had my first Monica on my skate crew, they and me and my best friend Heather. We continued skating until we had our own children, until we were born. Skating was more than just fun. It was a great training and a way to stay active.
Yesterday I took part in the 20th anniversary ceremony of the film Rollbounce at the legendary “Cascade” skating rink, bringing many wonderful memories from Skating Day. The film is set in the late 70s when I first fell in love with skating. He and his friends rule their local rink, but once it closes they are forced to challenge the more upscale sweet water roller rink, led by the sweetness of a charismatic skater, they have to prove themselves against realistic champions.
I still have roller skates and I hope to one day pass on the tradition to my grandchildren. My own kids enjoyed skating, but not as much as I grew up.
