On Tuesday, September 10, Netflix’s The Piano had its international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival at the Princess of Wales Theatre. Director and co-writer Malcolm Washington, producers Denzel Washington and Todd Black, and co-writer Virgil Williams were in attendance along with cast members John David Washington, Daniel Deadwyler, Corey Hawkins, Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Skylar Smith, and Gayle Bean. Also in attendance were executive producers Katia Washington and Constanza Romero Wilson, Leslie Jones (editor), Erica Fraumann (post supervisor), David Bomba (production designer), Mary Vergne (casting director), Lindsey Graham (casting director), Andrea Bowman (head of hair), Lawrence Davis (key hair), and Parra Charde (head of makeup).
A family conflict erupts over an heirloom piano. A battle between brother (John David Washington) and sister (Danielle Deadwyler) – one wants to sell the piano, the other won’t let it go – highlights haunting truths about how the past is perceived and who defines a family’s legacy. Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu, Skylar Alyse Smith, Jerrika Hinton, Gayle Bean, Danielle Deadwyler and Corey Hawkins star in Malcolm Washington’s directorial debut, based on August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play.
