What do you do to save your child? What about someone’s child that you care deeply about?
These impossible questions confront music mogul David King The highest 2 is the lowesta charming new crime thriller from Academy Award-winning film director Spike Lee. This is the hallmark of the prolific director’s 24th story, his first to be set and filmed in New York City in over a decade.

A completely modern rethink of Kurosawa Akira’s 1963 classic High and lowthe film stars Oscar winner Denzel Washington as David King, the towering figure in the music industry. For over 20 years, his label, Stackin’ Hits Records, produced chart topping artists, but now King is at a crossroads.

I had the opportunity to watch the pre-screening, and if you’re going to watch the movie, you may not want to click, but if you don’t mind, always check what I thought inside…

The casting was spot-on. Of course, Denzel offered a performance from the great power, but there was no surprise there! Jeffrey Wright was another outstanding. At first, I nailed him as a villain, but his character was in a surprising direction. Even more interesting, his on-screen son was played by his real-life son, Elijah Wright, making his film debut. Their authentic father-son bond was truly refreshing to see on screen.

The gritty New York atmosphere of the film is a character in itself, and much of this action unfolds in Dumbo. This is a region rich in culture and arts that films showcase beautifully. The design of the set was incredible, and David King’s penthouse was a visual treat.

One of the surprising casting choices was $AP Rocky. He nailed his role as an obsessive rapper who is willing to go to dangerous extremes, desperate for record deals. The script also touches on timely topics such as the growing influence of AI, the clash between old and new school music industry methods, and social media followers playing a major role in success.

Spike Lee also packed familiar faces of his past works, including Rosie Perez and Anthony Ramos (his past works)She needs to have it), and many more fun cameos. True to Spike’s style, there were plenty of twists and even some quirky and unexpected moments, but overall, The highest 2 is the lowest It has a sharp and attractive ride. I’ll hand it out on 8/10.

When the legendary music mogul known for having “the best ears in business” targets ransom schemes, he is forced into a tense moral dilemma of life or death. This marks the fifth collaboration between Denzel Washington and Spike Lee, bringing Kurosaki’s timeless story to the raw modern streets of New York City.
