I can’t believe I’m writing this. Ava is in kindergarten. Yeah, I know. Time flies! I can’t believe some of you have been here since 2009 when I was still in college. Life and time really flies. I’m so grateful for you all.
Let’s not get sentimental for a second!
Every day in mommy groups, someone asks what to prepare my child for kindergarten. It’s a great question, especially for me as a first-time mom who has to do everything from scratch.
Here’s a short list of items you’ll need, feel free to add more in the comments.
label:
I prefer one with her name already on it, but you can also buy one blank and personalize it.
shoes:
2 pairs of indoor velcro shoes. Velcro is great for toddlers.
Less work but no help.
Backpacks:
This is a bit controversial for me because while I think a big bag is important, I also don’t think it should be so big that it puts too much strain on the child.
Lunch box/lunch bag:
I am literally addicted to the bento box game and will never go back. I love how easy it is to pack lunches as a mom. Going without a bento box and putting it in your backpack is also your choice.
2 Nut Free Snacks:
There’s a big emphasis on the nut-free portion – think goldfish, fruits, veggies, crackers, etc. When I first heard nut-free I was a bit taken aback, but the possibilities are endless.
Reusable Water Bottle:
If possible, it’s better to have something that doesn’t spill, and for kindergarteners and children like my child, something that doesn’t bite the straw. My daughter loves to bite the straw… too bad.
1 large ziplock bag
Keep a spare set of clothes in your closet (socks, seasonal pants, shirts, underwear). Accidents happen, so it’s good to always have a spare set of clothes to change into.
option umbrellaPersonally, I am sometimes in a rush to pick up my child, so it is very convenient to have the stroller in my child’s room so I don’t have to forget to bring it with me.
