The first trailer and poster for Disney’s long-awaited live-action version of Moana, starring Katherine LaGaia as Moana and Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as the trickster demigod Maui, were released today.
The trailer provides a first look at the live-action adventure, introducing audiences to the majestic island and the vibrant people of Motunui. Maui is a shape-shifting demigod. The intimidating but adorable Kakamora tribe. Lagaia plays Moana, a wayfinder who sings the powerful lyrics “I Am Moana.”
In addition to LaGaia and Johnson, the “Moana” cast also includes John Tui, a native of Auckland, New Zealand, who plays Moana’s no-nonsense father, Chief Tui. Samoan-New Zealander Frankie Adams plays Moana’s cheerful and strong-willed mother, Sheena. Lena Owen from New Zealand’s Bay of Islands will play the role of Gramma Tara, whom Moana admires. In Disney’s live-action reimagining of the beloved Oscar®-nominated animated adventure, Moana (Katherine LaGaia) answers the call of the sea and joins the infamous demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) for the first time on an unforgettable journey across Motunui’s coral reefs to restore prosperity to her people. The film is directed by Emmy and Tony Award winner Thomas Kail (“Hamilton”). Produced by Dwayne Johnson, Beau Flynn, Danny Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Thomas Kail, Scott Sheldon, Charles Neuwirth, and Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the animated films Moana and Moana 2, served as executive producers. Audiences can experience the great cinematic sights, sounds and songs of “Moana” in U.S. theaters on July 10, 2026.
