In today’s episode It seems labor cannot escape from itselfDiane Abbott – the UK’s first black female MP and permanent scapegoat-in residence – has been newly suspended by the Labour Party. Her attack? Some party leaders will resume conversations about 2023 comments on racism that appear to be more threatening than the actual racism itself.
Boris Johnson is able to pen an entire novel in offensive prose and is still invited to dinner, but Abbott is benched to talk about the nuances of discrimination.
The move is surrounded by normal “following protocols” nonsense, highlighting what many Black Britons already know. As the workforce hones its progressive veneer, it still doesn’t seem to have any space at the table for outspoken black women who refuse to taste politically.
And what’s at stake here is not just Diane’s political future, but a subtle message whispering to all black women. It may break the glass ceiling, but it won’t be too comfortable under the debris.
It’s more than just a suspension. That’s a symptom. And silence from her supposed allies? Deaf ears.
