kiki palmer On the red carpet of her latest movie premiere, One of Them Days, And I had the pleasure of speaking to her about the film. As we chatted, I couldn’t help but compliment her on her stunning red dress. It was really hot! We couldn’t miss the unique style, so naturally we had to ask who the designer was. She excitedly revealed that it was a vintage piece by a legendary figure. John Galliano. Vintage can be difficult to wear, so not everyone can pull it off, but Keke’s natural fashion sense made this style completely stand out. She succeeded! More photos of the inside…

Styling designer vintage clothing is all about blending timeless pieces with modern sensibilities, allowing the look to feel fresh while still respecting the history and craftsmanship of the clothing. Here’s how to put vintage designer clothes to good use.

1. Balance period and modern items

  • Combine with modern basics: If you’re wearing a vintage designer blouse or jacket, balance it out with modern jeans or a sophisticated skirt to avoid looking too dated.
  • Combine with minimalist accessories: Vintage designer pieces can be the focal point, so keep your accessories simple and modern (e.g. a pretty handbag, minimalist shoes).

2. Focus on fit

  • Adjust as needed: Vintage clothing often has a different cut and fit compared to modern clothing. If it’s a little too big or long, consider having it tailored into a flattering, modern silhouette.
  • High-waisted, structured style: Many vintage pieces, especially from the 80s and 90s, have high waists and structured shoulders. Pair it with cropped tops or tucked-in blouses for a balanced look.

3. Combine textures and fabrics

  • Vintage designer pieces often feature luxurious fabrics such as silk, wool, and velvet. Pair these with more modern materials like leather, cotton, and denim to create interesting contrasts.
  • For example, pair a vintage Chanel wool skirt with a modern leather jacket, or wear a classic Louis Vuitton trench coat over a simple cotton T-shirt.

4. Keep your accessories classic

  • jewelry: Vintage pieces often have a rich history, so let your accessories shine without overwhelming your outfit. Choose subtle gold or silver pieces, vintage watches, or statement brooches.
  • footwear: Update the look of vintage designer wear with sleek, modern footwear, including boots, heels, and sneakers. Pair your ’90s dress with modern boots for an edgy look.

5. Enjoy the 90s and early 2000s revival

  • Vintage designer pieces from the ’90s or early 2000s are making a comeback. Think logo-heavy pieces, oversized blazers, and bold colors. It is often combined with minimalist and athleisure looks.
  • For example, a vintage monogrammed Louis Vuitton bag can be paired with relaxed high-waisted jeans and a tucked-in graphic T-shirt.

6. Layering is the key

  • Layering vintage items with current trends can give your outfit relevance. For example, pair a vintage designer dress with a modern bomber jacket or layer a vintage trench coat over a hoodie.
  • You can also layer vintage pieces within the same look, such as pairing a patterned vintage blazer with a simple knit top or wide-leg pants.

7. play with colors and prints

  • Vintage designer clothing features unique colors and prints that may be bold by today’s standards. If you’re wearing a vintage floral dress or patterned blazer, keep the other pieces of your outfit neutral so the statement piece shines.
  • For example, if you’re wearing a vintage floral skirt, pair it with a neutral-colored top and accessories so it doesn’t overwhelm your outfit.

8. Invest in timeless designer pieces

  • iconic bags and shoes: Vintage designer bags (Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Hermès, etc.) can easily elevate any modern outfit. These classic pieces never go out of style and can be paired with just about anything.
  • vintage denim: Vintage Levi’s or designer denim jackets are an easy way to create a cool look by pairing them with modern or vintage pieces.

9. Keep it simple for impact

  • Vintage designer items often feature intricate details such as embroidery, beading, and unique stitching. Let these details stand out by keeping the rest of your outfit to a minimum.
  • Think vintage Yves Saint Laurent blazers. When worn with a simple black top and tailored pants, the blazer’s craftsmanship speaks for itself.

10. confidence is key

  • Second-hand clothes have a unique atmosphere, so please wear them with confidence. The more comfortable and confident you are in wearing your vintage pieces, the better your style will be.

By combining the rich history of designer vintage clothing with contemporary items and accessories, you can create stylish, fresh styles that feel both nostalgic and modern.
