Nia Long, Colman Domingo and Jaafar Jackson take center stage on our April 2026 digital cover essence The magazine spotlights the trio ahead of the highly anticipated Michael Jackson biopic, michael. Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, the film chronicles the global superstar’s extraordinary rise from his early days as the young lead singer of the Jackson 5 in Gary, Indiana, to his reign as the legendary King of Pop.
Casting for the film began in January 2023, with Jermaine Jackson’s son Jaafar Jackson ultimately cast in the iconic role of his late uncle Michael Jackson. Nia Long plays Katherine Jackson, the matriarch of the family, and Colman Domingo plays the role of Joe Jackson, the strict and ambitious patriarch.
Production officially began in January 2024 after delays due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Despite filming over a long period of time, the cast developed strong bonds along the way.
“The shoot was so long that we had to really love each other,” Nia said, reflecting on their behind-the-scenes friendship. “The goal for me was to honor Michael in a way that would excite the fans. We wanted to tell his story authentically and honor his legacy at the same time. Having Jaafar at the center of everything made it even more special because he is truly an extension of our family.”
To prepare for this difficult role, Jaafar, 29, spent nearly two and a half years training with Michael’s original choreographer, mastering the intricate dance styles that characterize the superstar’s performances. Mr. Long recalled witnessing his dedication firsthand.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” she said. Domingo agreed, adding, “His work ethic is incredible. It was really impressive to see him take on this role every day.”
The biopic has been in development since November 2019, and Lionsgate officially announced the project in February 2022. The studio opted for a worldwide theatrical release rather than debuting on streaming, emphasizing the scale of the story being told.
michael ‘ is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 24, 2026, and will be distributed by Lionsgate in the United States and Universal Pictures overseas.
