Greta Gerwig: The question of how to express yourself is not so important the devil wears pradaIt’s about. For men, there is a clear norm of dressing according to the job you want. However, for women, dressing has always been vague. Anna, how much do you think about that? Do you think about how women should dress to convey power?
Anna Wintour: I don’t think there’s any need to wear a power suit to the office. Think about the women you admire. Mrs. Obama comes to mind. Whether she’s wearing Chanel by J.Crew, Duro Olowu, or Matthieu Blazy, she always looks like herself. I’m full of admiration for New York City’s new First Lady. Because she looks really cool and wears a lot of vintage. Young, modern, and completely herself. To be fair, Melania Trump also looks just like herself whenever she wears a dress.
Meryl Streep: I have a lot of thoughts on this. I think the most…powerful message our current First Lady sent was in a coat that said, “I really don’t care, do you?” When I visited incarcerated immigrant children. All clothing is an expression of ourselves, but we are also subject to larger historical and political expectations. It’s amazing to see women in power wearing bare arms on TV while men wear shirts and ties or suits. Women have a built-in sense of apology. They have to show their smallness. That’s the price. Women’s advances in the late 20th century and early this century were destabilizing. It’s as if a woman had to say, “I’m small. I can’t walk in these shoes. I can’t run. I’m naked and I’m not trying to be intimidating.”
Gerwig: How do you balance being a grandma with work?
Streep: It’s just about capturing a few seconds and capturing everything you can, knowing how fleeting everything is and how quickly time passes. My mom told me that, and I said, “Oh yeah.” It’s the longest and shortest time. And nothing can be taken back. So take as many as you can…. I think it’s sacred. I have six grandchildren. 6 are under 6 years old. 6 people, 5 people, 4 people, 3 people, 2 people, 1 person. I hope it’s not over yet, but we’ll see. I can’t express how much it means to me that my children give me as much time as I give them. The only thing I can say is that since it is located on two coasts, I often take plane rides.
Gerwig: Anna also has grandchildren.
Winter: I don’t have as many as Merrill. I only have four, and I have four step-grandchildren who grew up around us. When you have a job like ours, you have to make time to be a mother. I obsessively went to games, attended parent-teacher meetings, and was present when it mattered. It felt like fashion I knew that I could be waiting for her whenever I wanted, and that it would be okay to become a busy mother. You make it work. We have a family estate on Long Island that we strive to make a focal point for all of us scattered around the world. We love celebrating birthdays and weddings. Tradition is important. As we are British, we play matches all the time and host countless tennis tournaments. And we try to take care of each other no matter what. I try to instill in my children and grandchildren that family is what matters, and that family provides love and support. If you have that, everything else is fine.
