The other night I was looking up some of the OG bloggers I used to follow when I started blogging. Back in 2010-2011, while blogging was still relatively new, there were a few standouts, but the fashion, writing, and overall content were very different. And GOOD. Some girls are incredibly stylish (remember Kelly Framel from The Glamourai? Or Karla Delas from Karla’s Closet?), and they don’t necessarily look super stylish. Although they are not style stars, I found their fashion and lifestyle content to be relatable and very helpful. I spent at least an hour every day reading their blogs, saving their outfits, and taking notes. It was a time when inspiration was everywhere.
Don’t get me wrong. I now have my fair share of IG and Pinterest screenshots on my phone, but…they just don’t hit me the same way. Something is missing. I really miss reading personal blogs and how inspiring they were. I know what the problem is (with monetization, a lot of people are following the same type of strategy and posting almost the same content in hopes that someone will use an affiliate link or get a brand deal) ). A little more.
I hate how much of the content currently being published is so homogeneous and interchangeable. Gone are the days of creative street style shoots. Many people give up on buying IKEA’s “cloffice” and just shoot at home. I miss not only drinking lattes but also looking at pictures of people outside. That’s not to say some people aren’t already on social media, but when they do, it’s overwhelmingly the same type of content over and over again. Monetizing your blog is truly a gift and a curse. I’m grateful for this new source of income, but it also has a huge impact on the creativity of our industry in many ways.
However, there is a ray of light at the end of the tunnel.
During my search, I found that some OGs have completely abandoned blogs dedicated to social media (personally, I think this is insane, because it’s a passive Because it’s income!!). But I’m glad to see some OG’s getting started. Because we’re moving to Substack, which is becoming very popular. I like that they’re getting back to creating long-form content, even if it’s in this “light” capacity. And my hope is that eventually they will bring back the actual blog on their own platform as well. I have an account, but I haven’t looked into it in detail yet. I miss the ease of being able to jump to other blog posts on the site after reading a blog post, but it’s just not that easy. Substack is not a social media platform, but it is still a platform that is not owned by its users. So you don’t want to lose all that content someday.
Anyway, social media is a great tool and is still a good source of inspiration, but I’m still…looking for more. Have you ever felt the same way?
