Do you know that toddlers eat a third of any fruit you give them? Regardless of the portion of the size you offer, or the amount they claimed they wanted it five minutes ago? I don’t know what it is (torture, maybe?), but I know how to solve it: yogurt bark.
The deal with food in my home is that you don’t have to clean your plates and you don’t have to eat anything you don’t want to. This isn’t because I’m the coldest parent I’ve ever had. That’s because I have my own history with food rules and restrictions. Because it ultimately led me to an intuitive diet – it completely changed my life. In general, I think that approach saved both my daughter and me from the stress of many diets.
But it does nothing for the fruit. Fruits remain abandoned on the plate each time. And I’m also the one who publicly denied the Clean Plate Club, so I’m also the one who’s been forced to deal with those cast-off berries and banana chunks. But what do I do with all this fruit? One day I opened my Instagram and like a miracle of the algorithm, the answer appeared.
Free!
I’ve been making yogurt bark for over a year – at least twice a week – that’s going well for everyone. It took me about 60 seconds and it saved me Barrel of food waste. All you need is a scrap of parchment, a scoop of yogurt, and a mashed up of fruits left by your child on your breakfast plate. Here’s how to make it in 5 simple steps…
1. Chop up abandoned fruit.
2. Spread yogurt on parchment. (I found that thick Greek yogurt works best, especially with bulky chunks of fruit. But you can use old yogurt to make the bark.)
3-4. Plow fruit bits into yogurt.
5. Microwave the nut butter or chocolate of your choice for 30 seconds and drizzle over the yogurt. Next, stick it in the freezer.
6. Cut frozen yogurt into bark parts.
Now that your child’s breakfast has been rejected, they will be a thrilling frozen snack that you have “cooked” for them. Freezing foods in the room can be ten times more exciting.
Congratulations, you saved the pain of throwing yet another perfectly good chunk of bananas to yourself.
Are there other good tricks to exhaust all kinds of leftovers? I’m all about ears!
