If you like classic hot chocolate, we recommend you try this homemade white hot chocolate recipe. One of my sons doesn’t like chocolate. So I decided to work on the perfect white hot chocolate recipe for him. And I’m surprised at how much I still love this (as a dark chocolate lover). With flavors of both white chocolate and vanilla, this cozy winter drink is a treat.
This white hot chocolate is made from milk, sugar, white chocolate chips or bars and vanilla. That’s all you need and takes less than 10 minutes to make. We recommend topping it with whipped cream or marshmallows. I like to sprinkle pumpkin pie spice on top, but another fun addition is candy canes.

How to make white hot chocolate
Add milk and sugar to a small saucepan. Heat over medium/high heat. Whisk to dissolve the sugar. Milk will be hot, but does not need to boil. Add vanilla extract and stir.
Remove from heat and add chopped chocolate or chocolate chips, stirring constantly to dissolve into drink.
Pour into mugs and top with whipped cream, marshmallows, or anything else you like. Enjoy it warmly.

Tips and notes
- You can also replace cow’s milk with milk alternatives such as soy milk or oat milk.
- You can also use vanilla syrup instead of vanilla extract. It adds a little more sweetness.
- If you change the granulated sugar to brown sugar, the flavor will change slightly.
