When Adam and I drove to Santa Barbara, wellness retreat When I hosted it earlier this month, I knew it would be beautiful, but I didn’t expect it to be so deeply healing. where we stayed Paraisopart of an amazing collection of six Spanish-style homes in Montecito designed by a very talented friend of mine. From the moment I arrived, surrounded by olive trees and golden light, I felt a breather I didn’t know I needed.

Starting the day with a walk on the beach, strolling through Summerland’s design shops, and winding down with a dinner to help you savor, this trip was exactly what Santa Barbara does best: a soulful, design-forward reset. With its white stucco walls, red tile roofs, dusty succulent gardens, slender palm trees, and slight European feel, it’s no wonder it’s called America’s Spanish Riviera. Here is my personal guide to the spots I love most where you can stay, eat, shop, and enjoy the magic of California.

Accommodation in Santa Barbara

paraiso collection, Montecito – We stayed here on this trip and it was absolutely perfect. The six historic homes on site have been completely reimagined and each designed with a level of purpose and luxury rarely seen in rental homes. Think arched doorways, natural textures, well-chosen art, and airy indoor-outdoor living. This is the kind of space where you can relax and enjoy a glass of wine while watching the sunset from the terrace.

Santa Ysidro RanchMontecito – An iconic retreat that feels like stepping into another era. Lush gardens, private cottages, and a hint of citrus in the air make this one of California’s most romantic stays. We celebrated Adam’s birthday here with dinner. The Stone House— and it was as magical as you could imagine.

Hotel CalifornianSanta Barbara – If you want to stay close to downtown, this boutique hotel combines Moorish architecture with a modern edge. Steps from the waterfront, perfect for those looking to walk to State Street and the Funk Zone.

The Simpson House – This beautiful bed and breakfast inn is set on 1 acre of landscaped English gardens, just steps from Santa Barbara’s Arts and Culture District. The main building has 15 rooms, as well as elegant suites and cottages with wood-burning fireplaces.

el capitan – These tents and cabins are different from your typical camping experience. Located just north of Santa Barbara and right on the beach, El Capitan is the ultimate glamping stay and the perfect way to experience El Capitan Canyon. If you don’t feel like cooking your own meals, head to Canyon Market and Deli for fresh and delicious food. Perfect for traveling with children!

where to eat

breakfast

field + fortSummerland – Our first stop of the morning and one of my favorite places ever. This is a hybrid shop that resembles a European village and is a cafe and home. The coffee is excellent, the avocado toast is heaped, and you can admire the beautifully selected collection of china and linens while you wait.

Janine – Enjoy a traditional and cozy breakfast in this place that is always crowded with locals. There are 3 stores, so it’s easy to find the store near you!

D’Angelos – This cozy little bakery serves homemade breads, pastries, and other snacks with sidewalk seating.

Summerland Beach Cafe – A laid-back, dog-friendly spot perfect after a morning walk on the beach. Enjoy a hearty breakfast, strong coffee, and a front porch that makes you feel at home.

lunch

Lily’s Taqueria – This little-known taco joint on the edge of downtown serves cheap, delicious, and unpretentious tacos.

savoy – With its relaxed atmosphere and healthy, freshly prepared menu, this cafe was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives for good reason. After a walk around State Street and downtown, we stopped in for one of our favorite simple, healthy lunches.

lilac patisserie – One of my personal favorites, this completely gluten-free bakery and cafe is a dream come true for those with gluten intolerance. We’re talking avocado toast and sandwiches made on amazing artisanal breads, as well as exquisite tarts, pastries, cupcakes and cheesecakes.

Santa Barbara Public Market – Luxury urban market with lots of different options. It’s a great spot for a stroll or a casual lunch.

brophy brothers – For a lively, casual lunch or dinner, head to Brophy Brothers, where you can enjoy fish and chips with ocean views.

San Isidro Ranch

dinner

Stone House at San Isidro Ranch – We had Adam’s birthday dinner here and it was unforgettable. Tucked away on a hillside and surrounded by flower-filled gardens, this restaurant is truly romantic. Seasonal California specialties like halibut with citrus beurre blanc and the best chocolate soufflé make for a true destination meal.

Rokita – Enjoy Spanish-inspired tapas and craft cocktails in a vibrant, design-forward space downtown. The paella and patatas bravas are non-negotiable.

boat house – An upscale seafood and brunch spot on Hendry’s Beach with panoramic ocean views and a heated outdoor patio.

BettinaMontecito – A modern pizzeria, a local favorite known for its wood-fired pizzas made with locally sourced grains, beautiful salads, and natural wines. Go early and sit on the patio. It’s casual, yet effortlessly chic.

Flor de maize – A popular waterfront restaurant serving Oaxacan cuisine with a modern flair. Enjoy local California ingredients with a Mexican perspective, including handmade tortillas, smoky mezcal cocktails, mole negro and grilled seafood. Vibrant, colorful and perfect for sunset dining.

Mr. Lucky – Montecito’s classic steakhouse charm. Enjoy perfect martinis, oysters, and plenty of old Hollywood energy.

lark – Market-driven cuisine in Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone. The place feels both lively and intimate, especially when dining al fresco under string lights.

santa barbara beach

Best beaches in Santa Barbara

Ledbetter Beach – Popular for beginner surfing lessons due to its gentle waves and relaxed attitude, my husband took his first surfing lesson here. There is a great area with picnic tables and grills if you want to enjoy a little cooking.

Hendry’s Beach – Extremely dog-friendly and a short walk to The Boathouse (mentioned above), this spot is one of the locals’ favorite spots.

butterfly beach – This is also a popular local spot, but it’s a popular spot on sunny days so finding parking can be difficult. There aren’t many facilities around, so don’t forget to bring a delicious picnic.

things to do in santa barbara

Ganna Walksa’s Lotus Land – The most beautiful botanical garden. Be sure to check out our private tours offered during the spring and summer.

funk zone – Located within a few block radius of the pier, Funk Zone is full of great wine tasting rooms and is a great place to research which wineries you’d like to visit if you’re planning on spending the day in Santa Ynez. Enjoy al fresco dining and local wine and craft beer.

Hike at Inspiration Point – This intermediate hike is fairly short (5.5 miles round trip), leads into the Santa Barbara foothills, and ends with great views of the city. On clear days, you can enjoy panoramic views of downtown, the coastline, and even the Channel Islands. Pro tip – Plan your hike to reach the top at sunset. Trailhead: Tunnel Road and Mission Rd., Santa Barbara, CA 93190

mission – Founded in 1786, The Mission is one of Santa Barbara’s most historic and beautiful landmarks. Tour the church, which is still in use, and explore its grounds to see 17th-century art, reproductions of the mission’s living quarters and kitchen, elegant architecture, and colorful gardens.

godmothers bookstoreSummerland – My latest obsession. It’s small, soulful, and full of beautiful reads, journals, and indie titles. They also serve great espresso, so it’s easy to spend an hour or two here.

***

Every time I get home from Santa Barbara, I feel refreshed. Maybe it’s the salty air, the design inspiration on every street corner, or the fact that time seems to move slowly enough to notice the beauty in the small things.

Whether you’re looking for a creative reset, a romantic weekend, or a healthy getaway, Santa Barbara has an unusual way of giving you exactly what you never knew you needed. I can’t wait to come back. When I return, you’ll find me between farmers markets and leisurely dinners under the stars.
