We’ve written a lot about fiction, but the other day I heard a reader named Jennifer say, “Are there any posts about non-fiction books? There’s a lot of love for the novels around these parts, but I’d like to hear if other COJ readers are interested in books about history, nature, biography, and more.
yes! Great idea, Jennifer. Let’s talk about non-fiction!
I love love love notes and biography of love – here is a bunch of things I recommend – and I learn a lot from them. Reading what it’s like to live another person’s life in a particular struggle is very eye-opening. Reading the memoirs made me feel so much empathy, understanding and adoration for others, and also recognized the number of people fighting a huge battle that we cannot see. I think sometimes, if everyone needs to read memoirs of 40 people in their lives, the world becomes a very different place.
Here are the ten I worshiped:
Tell me how it ends: 40 questions essay By Valerie Luiselli
Beautiful country By Qian Julie Wang
Normal family by Christabilton
I know my name Chanel Mirror
You wouldn’t believe what happened to Lacey. Amber Ruffin and Lacey Lamar
So please help me By Brooke Barker
Persepolis By Majane Satrapi
Heating and cooling with Beth Ann Fennelly
In love by Amy Bloom
When Paul Karanity Xo makes breath air
but! Aside from memoirs, I have not read anything so straightforward nature/history/science/psychology or anything like that. I would like to hear the recommendations you have. The New York Times also created a list 21 non-fiction books to read this spring (Gift link), if you want to read it.
Please share your REC below. I want to hear it. Thank you Jennifer to Post Request.
PS What is the beautiful thing you read, and what is the title of your memoir?
