What Is Your Joy Span?

Joanna Goddard Freddie

Over the past few months, I’ve been the first to jump into menopause…

…And the funny side effect is that you wake up soaking wet (the other day Anton said, “Mom, I love you, I don’t love the sweat in your bed” – I keep thinking about what makes life meaningful.

Maybe it’s because I closed the door in the year of birth. I’m in a new chapter in lifeOr because there doesn’t seem to be death very It’s as abstract as before – but for some reason, I feel an imminent, almost physical desire, leaning against what is important, what brings joy, what brings me to lift up my loved one. Decades later, what will I look back and be more happy to thank you?

Last night I called my mother and told her about this incredibly urgent feeling. “The other day I took an exercise class,” she told me, stirring pasta noodles. “The woman said, ‘Don’t think about your life expectancy. You will die. Instead, think about your health and joy range.” My mother stopped. “”A span of joy. ” I loved it. ”

Maybe that’s what my body is telling me: Remember the range of your joy. My 20s and 30s were my 40s and I was feeling everything about hustling and building in my 50s, but now it feels like time to pause and absorb everything. You will notice warm, satisfying, whimsical, excited, or calm and blissful moments and make them more.

What is on your list? A simple joy I wrote in the past:

A sunny autumn day
Mouse cream cheese bagel
Both my kids hugging me and watching the movie
Read in bed
Funny teenager text
Jacket potato
Open the rose
Grassy waves At Storm King
The word “patient”
When you read something so beautiful, you place your hands in your heart
Magic tricks that are impossible to grasp
Deep night sleep
Kettle chips

Toby Anton

Plus, of course, everything about my kids

I also remember calling my dad every night during quarantine. He lives alone and one day he told me, “The only thing I’ve talked about in real life this month was the grocery store fish guy.” The pandemic was tough! So we went into a routine of talking every night for a few minutes or an hour. Neither of us did much because we didn’t report much – we would ask random questions like, “In your opinion, what is the most beautiful car?” And then, “Tell me about the sailing trip you really enjoyed?” (to him) or “How are you trying to teach the boys the love of learning?” and “Who do you imagine writing while working with Joe’s cup?” (to him). We went down the rabbit hole for everything big and small. I cherished those conversations and he once texted me.

So I think I’ll call my dad tonight. Read in bed with the boy. Place salt and poison chips in a bowl. My heart already feels full.

what about you? What increases your joy range? What is your simple pleasure? Have you ever felt such a strong desire before?

What do you think about PS Death and what do you think will happen if you die?
