What Are Your Dad’s Rules for Life?
SHARE

All dads seem to have strong ideas about music, travel, thermostats and more. I am no exception. So, in honor of Father’s Day, I called my father and interviewed him about the rules of his life…

trip

Travelling somewhere new.
When you go to a familiar place, you run at the same pace as you would at home. However, if you don’t know what’s around each corner, time will be extended significantly. One day is a week, and one week is a month. It’s very resilient to experience something new. When I sit on a deck chair or lie down on the beach, it’s not my tea. I would rather stick pins in my eyes.

Get a window seat.
I like looking out the window and seeing people turn into ant size. I also want to be aware of the situation. When we land, I want to see the flaps drop down as they should.

We will depart early for the airport.
Due to security, parking challenges, and general habits, I tend to allow 45 minutes of room.

interesting

Please talk to Wallflowers.
At parties, I like to talk to wallflowers. Maybe they don’t know anyone there. My one skill is, as a conversationist, I know a little about a lot if you want. So, whatever that is, I have a great time learning more from this guy who knows what it was like to grow in the Antarctic of the Moon and this part of the world.

Listen to people.
Sometimes, in a conversation, the person is just waiting for him to put in the next bit. I feel sorry for them when someone is self-absorbed. There is something much more interesting than your single perspective. If you don’t know what other perspectives are, you’re really missing it!

There is no dinner music.
I’m an active music listener, so when the music is being played – even in the elevator – I can’t do not have listen. Whether it’s Handel, love or Taylor Swift, I turn it off while I’m with people.

car

Everyone needs to get a Honda Fit.
Every family in the country can be happy with Honda Fit, and if you have a larger family, get a VW Passat station wagon. When carrying camps to all children, it is important not to buy a big car for just one week that year.

Drive quietly on the ice.
There is no sudden movement. It becomes as smooth as silk. There’s no need to go slowly. Please be kind.

Use climate control.
I remember the Blackford Taurus Show I had in 1991. This was the first car in climate control. I thought I needed something a little more. I reached out to press the dash button and switched over before my fingers got there. I thought, ooooh. And I was sold. Set it to 69 in winter and 71 in summer. Otherwise, don’t touch it. I couldn’t do any more.

Child-raising

Name your child after they are born.
Before you were born, we had names on our faces. Your name was first Lucy Claire, did you know that? But you have to meet the kids first, I really believe it. You can put it on my gravestone: Meet the child.

Answer your child’s phone.
I like to talk to the kids so I always pick up when my kids call. I probably prefer to talk to them more than anyone else in the world. And you usually don’t call with problems, but if that’s the case, I hope you’re ready.

Thank you Dad! And tell me: What are the rules of your dad’s life?

A love letter to the father who replaces the PS, and who are similar to the children in your life?
