I’ve noticed that I sometimes play fast and loosely with the term “salad” here in the Midwest, but this is a classic and I stand for it! Watergate Salad is a cold dessert type salad made with marshmallows and cool whip. For me, it’s a staple for backyard barbecues and holiday dinners. I have very vivid memories of this green creamy salad on a plate of Thanksgiving turkey and barbecue chicken. Don’t knock until you try it!
Some people call this watergate salad recipe by other names, such as pistachio dessert salad and pistachio fluff. The name Watergate Salad comes from the fact that this side dish has similar ingredients and flavor to Watergate Cake. And both recipes were created around the time of the Watergate scandal, when you guessed it.

material
- Pistachioprine mix
- Juice and crushed pineapple
- Mini Marshmallow
- Walnuts – or other nuts can be used
- Cool whip – or use fresh whipped cream
I like to serve this along with some Maraschino cherries on top, but it’s an option.

How to make a watergate salad
Add all the ingredients to a large mixing bowl.
Everything can be folded gently. The goal is to mix well, but it doesn’t necessarily eliminate cool whips completely. The mixture turns green from the pudding mix.
Chill and eat. Place leftovers in the fridge and store them in broadcast containers for 1-2 days.

Tips for making
- The watergate salad is perfect for the day it was made. And even if leftovers are well stored in a day or two, they can get soaked.
- I usually use the regular (vanilla?) mini marshmallows in this recipe, but if you want to add a fruity flavor, you can use it Fruity Mini Marshmallowsimilar to an ambrosia salad.
- I sometimes add to the top of this salad and reserve a cool whip about 1/4 cup for a clean presentation, but that’s not necessary.
