This homemade waffle recipe is the ultimate breakfast. The soft, fluffy interior and a subtle flavorful exterior are slightly crisp. If you love our homemade pancakes, you should try these next!
What is the difference between a waffle and a pancake batter? To be honest, it’s not that much. You can often use them interchangeably, like when using mixes (think Bisquick). However, this waffle recipe will help you add a little more fat, oil to the batter and create its crunchy look. It’s a maple syrup prefecture vehicle!

Waffle ingredients
- All-purpose flour
- Brown sugar
- baking powder
- salt
- milk
- oil
- egg
- Vanilla extract
I use cooking oil spray for waffle iron, but many waffle irons don’t actually need to add oil. You’ll also want to be served with butter and maple syrup.

direction
In a medium-sized mixing bowl, stir in the dry ingredients, including flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.
Add wet ingredients: milk, oil, eggs, vanilla extract. Mix these until wet batter forms.
Heat the waffle iron according to the instructions. When ready, add 1/4 cup batter (or more or less depending on the size of waffle iron) and cook until finished. My waffle iron has a green light that lights up when the waffle is finished, but usually adds another 30 seconds for a crisp look.
Heat the butter and maple syrup.

Tips and alternatives
- If necessary, you can use granulated white sugar instead of brown sugar. I like the flavors that brown sugar adds, but the white sugar is also completely fantastic.
- I tend to use canola and vegetable oils, but liquid edible oils work. If the oil has a strong flavor, like olive oil or coconut oil, this gives the waffle that flavor.
- You can add 1/4 tsp of cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice to add flavor to this recipe.
- Waffle irons can vary considerably and you will need to get the cooking time for the announcement to read and experiment with your instructions.
