Torta is a Spanish term that can refer to cakes or flatbreads, but I’m referring to Mexican sandwiches. I love tortta! Very similar to tacos, but packed a little more with extra sandwich pans. Plus, there are endless fillings that can be used to make the ideal torta recipe.
Most often, torta is made from terrera or borillo bread, but if you can find either, you can use a crusty roll or baguette. I like toast the bread and fill it with meat, lettuce, tomato, melted cheese or guacamole (you can use both if you like). I’ll share a specific recipe for Karnitas Tarta on the recipe card at the end of this post, but since this is truly one of the customizable recipes, I’ll share many other filling ideas as well.
Related: Although not traditional, this torta recipe allows you to use homemade focaccia for your bread.

Tips and notes
- If you want to add melted cheese, add one or two cheeses to the inside of the bread, as the cheese melts and toasts the outside.
- If you have pre-packed meat, warm it up before adding it to the sandwich.
- If this torta is too messy or the stuffing falls off easily, we recommend wrapping it in burrito-like aluminum foil and keeping it warm and confused as you eat.
- The torta is the best on the day it was made. However, many components can be pre-made or prepared and stored individually in the fridge. Next, when ready, toast and assemble the sandwich.
