“When I browse the Facebook Marketplace, I always keep an eye on sturdy pieces of wood.” Jessica Manning Brosegrew up in Stockholm and Minneapolis, but now lives in Los Angeles with her husband Zack and baby Nina. “They are usually someone’s grandma’s and not the current trend, so they’re made and the prices are lower than what they’re worth.” Here, Jessica looks inside…
Dining area

pendant: Noguchi. Dining tables and chairs: Facebook Marketplace. Seat cushion: H&M Home. High chair: Stokke. Rug: Rush House.
Grown up in Sweden: I was born in Stockholm and lived there until I was six years old. I remember feeling very embraced by our community. It’s a family-based society, and like every corner of the playground, making sure everyone has what they need. I also remember running through the forest with my friends and picking berries. It’s a very sweet and peaceful place.

About Swedish tradition: I have sweet teeth worship Swedish pastries. My favorite is Semlaa cardamom bread cut in half and filled with fresh whipped cream and almond paste. I also light candles all year round. They make the entire house feel cozy.
Living area

Daybed: Sunday. Armchair: Lulu & Georgia. Lamp: Facebook Marketplace. Coffee Table: “Rif for $20 at Goodwill!” Rug: Rug USA.
About smart furniture: This room includes both the dining room and the living room so I wanted two areas to flow well. The daybed shows that each part of the room serves its own purpose.

On rug shopping: I really love the big rugs that make the room feel warm and grounded. I think people often can’t get enough rugs because they can be very expensive, but the company Rug USA Partnering with interior designers, beautiful collections will emerge. If you are purchasing second hand items, look for a 100% wool rug. That way, just take it to a rug cleaner and it will last forever.

About learning about rif: Our family had a rather fixed budget so I grew up with my mother looking for clothes and furniture. Sometimes I felt embarrassed. All the other kids at school wore Abercrombie & Fitch and I had a goodwill style. But now I’m proud to develop my muscles and go to the store and look for a modest piece that I can work in our lives.
kitchen

About family rituals: Zack, Nina, and I take great care of my morning walks. When it’s hot in LA, we leave the door by 6am to catch the refreshing morning air. At the time, the neighborhood was very quiet and our daughter was love It’s a stroller, so it’s content where everyone is looking at the yard and waving to several neighbors with their dogs.

A classic in the pantry: I like to bake with Trader Joe Bourbon vanilla bean paste. It’s reasonably priced, with small vanilla bean spots and a deep flavor. It also has a taste that is mixed with coffee.
Family Room

Bookshelves: “All three of the Facebook Marketplace are for $75.” Marble side table: “Handmade by my husband’s great grandfather.” Striped armchair: Facebook Marketplace.
Growing up in Minnesota: My American parents met while living in Stockholm, and they always planned to return to the US, where we ended up settling in Minneapolis, close to our grandparents. Minneapolis is a decent size city with a huge amount of access to nature. The lake is magic and children can just be children. The winters there are brutal (negative 40 wind cold!), but it’s the perfect place to grow.

Osman and the sofa: Interiors define. coffee table: Sunday. Throw a pillow: Banana Republic House. Rug: Rug USA.
Negotiation tips: If you want to negotiate with a Facebook Marketplace seller, let us know that you can get the item right away. They are often open to accept lower prices when they realize they don’t have to negotiate with many people over several days.

Sweet house: To me, second-hand pieces make the house feel like home because I know that there is a story behind the house. They bring a sense of comfort and security. This is especially nice as we live in rentals and don’t know how long we will stay.
nursery school

Paint: Old white Farrow & Ball. glider: Oilo. Baby bed: same name. Rug: Rug USA.
About funny things about babies: Before becoming a mom, I didn’t realize how quickly my baby would change. Nina grew very much in this window of time. It feels like Nina is growing all day. Within the past week, she has been sitting herself for the first time, squealing a tonne. She has a lot to say! It’s wild that every morning I look at my backpack and become like, “I swear she’s changed overnight.”

shelf: Amazon. chair: Charlie Crane.
Pop of colours: We wanted to feel happy and childlike in her nursery, but not super “baby” either. I painted “old white” on the wall Farrow & Ball It made it feel light and clean, then relied on Nina’s toys to add colour and whimsical stuff.
Parents’ bedroom

bed: Lulu & Georgia. futon: Jenny Kane. Lamps and Side Tables: Facebook Marketplace.
On a simple TV: Zack and I recently decided that we needed some light to get caught up in the night. We’re back Schitt’s Creek And I forgot how interesting it was! My favourite character is Alexis, she is iconic.

About motherhood surprises: Growing up, I thought I knew what it was like to be a parent because I was working as a nanny. But the reality of becoming a mom knocked me on the face. Going to someone else’s house is very different, and after taking care of the child, you go home and sleep soundly. The loss of sleep was real! On the other hand, being a mom was also the most wonderful transition. Seeing the world through fresh eyes is magical.
Thank you very much, Jessica!
