Strasbourg at Christmas time looks to me like what Dr. Seuss had in mind when he was building Whoville in Strasbourg. How the Grinch Stole Christmas. It’s literally like stepping into a magical city of lights, with Christmas decorations in every window, the smell of mulled wine in the air, and Christmas music wafting through the picturesque town.
We’ve created a guide to things to do in Strasbourg at Christmas, as well as a guide to Christmas markets when visiting this magical city.
Strasbourg Christmas Market 2024: 27 November to 27 December 2024.
They don’t call it Capital de Noël (Christmas Capital) for nothing. Strasbourg’s Christmas market is world-famous, and the sight of the giant Christmas tree in the town square may bring tears to your eyes. France’s Alsace region may be one of the most beautiful regions in Europe, but when it comes to Christmas, Strasbourg is the place to be. We’ve put together a list of things to do in Strasbourg, France over Christmas. This will be the most memorable and magical Christmas ever.
Strasbourg is on the border between France and Germany, and to be honest, it has changed borders many times over the years. Although it is now a French city, it still has a strong German influence. Don’t be surprised if you hear German being spoken as you pass the Christmas stalls. How to get to Strasbourg It is easily accessible as it has the second largest train station after Paris. You can also fly to Germany’s Karlsruhe Airport, approximately 45 minutes away. I often take a car or bus from my town, Heidelberg, Germany, which is only about an hour away.

christmas market
Strasbourg has not one, not two, but even seven Christmas markets. There are 10 of them. For a city of this size, it’s completely unnecessary, but it’s the best thing possible. The city is decorated from street to street with lights, garlands, and decorations. You can see all the markets in a day or two by walking around the city. Christmas markets usually start in the last week of November (22nd) and end on Christmas Eve (24th December).
Strasbourg Christmas Market 2024 dates will be from 27 November to 27 December 2024. There are several markets that remain open after Christmas.
Of course, there are many Christmas markets around the world, especially in Germany, but Strasbourg’s Christmas market seems to stand out. Markets represent times past, where families come together to celebrate, splurge, and share. The presence of a Christmas market here is unique and reflects the fact that Germany once ruled the area.
The Christmas market tradition is distinctly German and it is special that this tradition remains in France. The most famous are: Christkindelsmerik Dating back to 1570, Place Broglie is one of the oldest markets in Europe.

There are over 300 food stalls in total in the city, so you’re sure to find one while strolling around. At the end of this post, we will list all the markets that will be held.
Check out the cathedral
of notre dame cathedral This is one of the most magnificent structures I have ever seen. From the 15th to the 17th centuries, this building was the tallest building in the world. Holding that ranking for that period means it was an architectural mastery and one of the finest expressions of Gothic art. Once inside, you can see the beautiful structure up close and check out the astronomical clock. Don’t forget to climb the tower for great views of the city.
Of course, there is also a Christmas market outside the cathedral, one of the oldest. You can enjoy a glass of mulled wine while the cathedral bells ring out from time to time. There are over 100 chalets (stalls or booths) here offering Christmas decorations, sheepskins, gloves, hot drinks and delicious food.
Eat German-French fusion food
Strasbourg is a great place to enjoy gastronomy. There are also two restaurants with three Michelin stars (Au Crocodile and Buerehiesel). Of course, all the German and French influences were combined to create a very delicious dish. One of my favorites is; Flam Cooken It is also called tarte flambée. A very thin pizza topped with crème fraiche, thinly sliced onions, and ham.
The intoxicating aroma of sizzling onions makes everyone want to try it. There are a wide variety of options and toppings, so you can find what you like. The best place to check out is L’Ancienne Douin This restaurant is famous for its Alsatian cuisine.

Admire the Christmas tree
What is it about Christmas trees that gives us all childlike wonder? There’s something so magical about the combination of evergreens, lights, and ornaments that always fills me with joy. When it comes to Christmas trees in Strasbourg, it is believed that bigger is better. The tree, which must be at least 30 meters tall, towers over the plaza and is illuminated with seven kilometers of twinkling lights. This palace on Place Kléber is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen and hosts a different theme each year.
On weekend nights and as Christmas approaches, you’ll find live music right next to the tree. There are plenty of shopping spots around and near the square in case you need Christmas presents. Just watch the lights come on as the sky darkens and become the star of Strasbourg’s Christmas show.
petite france
This is one of the most attractive regions in all of Europe. Strasbourg’s historic district is lined with half-timbered houses along the river. Of course, it will be even more lit up on Christmas. Walk along the canals and admire the 14th-century towers, or wander the cobblestone streets lined with traditional restaurants and shops. Don’t forget to stop and take a photo at the Quartier des Tanneurs, one of the best photo locations in Strasbourg.
One of the best parts of walking through Petit France is how well preserved it is. Of course, there will also be a Christmas market. It really feels like going back in time. When the bridge lights up and shines over the water, you can’t help but feel romantic.
