Winter in Europe is like a snow globe coming to life. Fantastic Christmas markets, the smell of roasted nuts and snow-covered chateaus create a dreamlike scene. But what’s the best part? Visiting Europe in the winter means flights and accommodation will be cheaper and less crowded.
Having experienced many winters in Europe, I have chosen my top 15 winter destinations. I tried to narrow it down to 10 places, but there were too many fascinating places to list them all.
Whether you want to get into the Christmas spirit, enjoy enchanting snowy landscapes or frolic in a castle, this guide to the best places to visit in Europe during the cold season has it all. Here are the best places in Europe to go for Christmas or if you want to spend your holidays.

1. Zermatt, Switzerland
I was mesmerized by the falling snow as I sat by the window and looked out at the quiet town below. There were no cars or people walking in sight, just skiers skiing down the well-worn roads. I was in Zermatt, Switzerland, and I still couldn’t see the looming Matterhorn. After days of not being able to see this amazing mountain, the clouds finally parted, the snow lifted, and she stood proud.
This beautiful and romantic city is one of the most beautiful in Europe. It’s a great place to relax with plenty of winter activities. My stay at this charming place was one of my favorites and one I will remember for years to come.

2. Strasbourg, France
No city in the world transforms into a Christmas wonderland like Strasbourg. All the windows and paths are decorated almost from top to bottom with lights and stuffed animals. This is a vibrant gingerbread town with half-timbered houses, lively Christmas markets, shopping, and German Christmas market traditions from neighboring countries. While you’re in the area, we recommend taking a quick trip to one of Germany’s traditional markets in Baden-Baden, Heidelberg, or Black Forest.

3. Austrian Alps
In the summer, you can find miles of greenery and the sound of cow bells roaming the wide open hills. But in winter, there is frost on the ground and everything feels like a wonderland. The rugged peaks of the Alps are truly spectacular, and the towering spiers of the churches in the towns below will transport you back in time.
My favorite town in the Alps is in the Wilder Kaiser district. I love the towns of Zell, Ellmau, Going and Kitzbühel.

4. Lake Como, Italy
If you’re traveling to Europe in the winter and want warmer weather and lower prices, Italy is the place for you. The famous lake is perfect for wine lovers and those looking to escape the crowds. Take a boat out on the water or visit nearby towns like Bellagio and Varenna. From mid-December to January 6, there is also a spectacular light show.
5. Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany
Rothenburg is a completely walled city dating back to the 12th century. If you’re looking for a truly romantic experience at a traditional German Christmas market, look no further. 6. Romania, Translivania
Dracula’s house is the perfect place for a winter or Halloween vibe. You’ll find stunningly picturesque countryside and the incredible true story of Vlad the Impaler, aka Dracula. Look for hidden gems in these beautiful cities, including traditional Romanian weddings. Not only is it full of castles, but it’s also home to some of the best food I’ve ever had. Plus, the prices are very low, the people are nice, and the history is interesting.
For authentic Romanian traditions and beautiful surroundings, we recommend visiting Sibiu, Sighisoara and Brasov. This underrated country is full of winding roads, stunning architecture, and delightful natural beauty and is well worth a visit.
7. Iceland
Shoulder season in Iceland is great. It’s gotten a bit cold, but there’s plenty of room to roam around. The chances of seeing the Northern Lights are much higher in winter (and fall). Arrive in Reyjavik by plane, but be sure to venture outside of town and explore the diverse landscapes Iceland has to offer. waterfall without people

8. Maastricht, Netherlands
Yes, you can of course visit Amsterdam, but consider heading to the cheerful city of Maastricht. One of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, this city is a vibrant city with medieval architecture and historic cobblestone streets. We recommend taking a walking tour and warming up with a pub or a delicious waffle. “pinky” was one of the best waffles I’ve ever had in my life! Located in the southern tip of the Netherlands, you can easily pop into Liege, Belgium to enjoy French cuisine.
9. London, UK
I know what you’re thinking. The situation would be freezing and miserable. However, London is not known for its particularly nice weather. And London offers a holiday like no other. Oxford Street is a feast for the eyes. There are string lights on every corner, ribbons as big as cars in the store, and you can skate in front of one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. That’s wonderful. A Christmas market is also held in Hyde Park.

10. Prague, Czech Republic
Prague is beautiful in all seasons, but winter brings out the best in the city. A light dusting of snow blankets the Old Town Square, creating the perfect backdrop for traditional Christmas markets. There are several markets in the city, so you can shop from shop to shop to buy handmade goods and eat warm and delicious Tolderink.

11. Lucerne, Switzerland
I know, I know, somewhere else in Switzerland? yes. It’s really beautiful. This impressive but small city is full of cozy cafes with soft lighting and delicious food. This covered bridge is the oldest in the world and spans a lake. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, medieval architecture, and beautiful lakes, this sleepy town is a great place to hang out.

12. Copenhagen, Denmark
The Danes use one word to describe coziness, which actually describes their lifestyle. Hygge. There’s no better place to warm up by the fireplace, sipping on a nice red wine and a sheepskin throw, and chatting about the weather. You can also enjoy delicious seafood at Torvehallerne and admire the colorful buildings on Nyhavn’s quayside. 13. Black Forest, Germany
The big city is full of bright lights and beautiful Christmas decorations. But nothing beats the natural and awe-inspiring beauty of Germany’s Black Forest. It has inspired fairy tales and stories for centuries. Vast mountains and dense evergreen trees create a beautiful scenery. Enjoy winter activities such as skiing and hiking, or enjoy coffee and cake in the nearby town of Sasbachwalden. From here you can visit nearby Heidelberg, Strasbourg and Baden-Baden.
It’s time to embrace the cold and head to Rovaniemi, the snowy wonderland of the far north. What better way to get into the holiday spirit than visiting Santa Claus’ official home? Located in the Arctic Circle, this is one of the best places to ride a husky through a maze of evergreens and whites. If you don’t mind cold temperatures, this is a great way to spend your winter vacation.

15. Chamonix, France
It also has the highest mountain in Europe and is one of the most gorgeous places in all of Europe. Mont Blanc towers over the picturesque city of Chamonix. The snow-covered Alps are especially spectacular. However, the town of Chamonix is full of great French culture and cuisine. It’s the perfect place to enjoy winter activities or relax by the fireplace.
