In my humble opinion, the room is not perfect without plants. The plants provide a much-needed pop of colour, and quickly make the space feel lively, grounded and more vibrant. Once the room is turned off, try adding plants. I’ve never failed me. And one space where you can always benefit from plants is the living room.
Whether you’re a seasoned green thumb or just starting your journey, there are living room plants that are perfect for any space and skill level. When I first started bringing plants into the house, I was all newcomers wrong. I quickly learned that thriving greenery requires more than love for the appearance of plants. This is a guide to choosing the best living room plants, from low-maintenance picks to bold statement greenery to easily increase your space. Let’s jump in!

Before you buy plants for your living room: Here are some things you need to know
I once bought a factory from Trader Joe’s without thinking about where I was going or what kind of care it needed. Spoiler alert: My poor plants didn’t last that long. Before you start browsing plants in your living room, there are a few things to consider before bringing in your home.
- Where should you place it? This is probably obvious, but knowing where you want to place your plants is most important. Not only will you decide how big or small your plants will become, but knowing how much light your space will give you can help you determine which plants will thrive and which plants will thrive. Don’t be like me – do your research!
- How much light does your living room have? Plants need water and sunlight to survive and thrive. Pay attention to how much natural light your living room provides, especially where you want to place the plants. Different plants require different levels of light, such as bright, indirect or low light.
- How do you maintain the plants? Some plants require very specific care (I’m looking at you, fiddle leaf fig), while others have very low maintenance. It’s really up to you to know how much care your plants need. What can you commit to? If you are supposed to bring home plants that require a low-maintenance plant but require a strict watering schedule, you may set yourself up for failure. Save your suffering and commit only to a level of comfort care.
- Are plants pet-friendly? If you have dogs and cats that roam freely around your space, look for living room plants that are non-toxic to pets.

10 Best Living Room Plants
If your space has empty corners, you’re looking for plants on a coffee table, or your living room is ready to soak in the sun and add some greenery.
Olive Tree
It makes sense to start with the plants that decorate Kamille’s living room. Olive Tree is very popular and for good reason, looking at her, she is stunning! They are perfect for living room corners where you can get lots of light. Olive trees prefer perfect sun, so if you know they will have at least six hours of sunlight a day, take one home home. Also, don’t worry if you lose the leaves when you first take them home. Changing environments can impact plant systems. But be patient. With plenty of sun and ordinary water, the leaves will return as they adapt to your space.
Fiddle Leaf Diagram
Another big light-loving plant that is perfect for your living room is fiddle leaf fig. I have one and honestly keeping her alive is one of my biggest accomplishments. Fiddle leaf figs are known for being highly maintained and very creepy, but once you get in on a daily basis, fiddle leaf figs can thrive! This plant has very large leaves and therefore loves the sun, making it another living room plant that thrives in a lot of natural light. These large leaves need dust and I maintain a strict watering schedule. I think fiddle leaf figs are worth paying particular attention.
ZZ Plant
If you’re looking for small, low-maintenance living room plants, start with the ZZ plant. They do well in heartfelt, low-light spaces (I don’t really like the direct sun!). Simply water them every 2-3 weeks and they will look beautiful on shelves or coffee tables.

Rubber tree
The large, dark leaves of the rubber tree definitely give it a feel. Another beginner-friendly plant – rubber trees require indirect sunlight and can be watered every 1-2 weeks. It’s good to keep an eye on it and give it a drink when the soil is dry.
Pothos
The Pothos plant is one of the easiest plants to care for and is very beginner friendly. They are perfect to cheer up your living room! Pothos grow quickly and they make wonderful hanging plants. I cascade a disco ball planter and a grape cascade towards the floor. I swear, these plants have nine lives like cats. It is easy to see when you are thirsty by shrinking the leaves, but you can give them a drink and cheer them up immediately.
Snake plant
I love snake plants! I have several homes in my home, including one in the living room, and they are the perfect maintenance plants that every home needs, and also helps to purify the air. Perfect for corners of living rooms. These plants can go for several weeks without water, do not require a lot of sunlight and are almost impossible to kill. Be careful to consume water. I’ve learned that it’s a difficult way.

Birds of Paradise
If you want a tropical touch in your living room, the bird of paradise is your ticket. This living room plant has large green leaves and certainly makes a statement. The birds of paradise are named after bird-like flowers, but this plant rarely flower indoors. Because it is a tropical plant, it loves the sun and is humid. Perfect for the living room corner!
Parlor’s palm
Soft and vintage-inspired by the parlor’s palms are another great option if your aesthetic is leaning towards the tropical. This plant has been around since the Victorian era. Put your palms in indirect light and dry the soil between watering. The palm is a tropical plant, but it doesn’t work in the direct bright sun, so it’s always kept in the shade.
Monstera Deliciosa
The lush and dramatic plant in this living room is also known as the “Swiss cheese plant.” Its leaves are divided and have holes. It is an attractive feature that many plant lovers love. This is another plant that is very popular and has good reason to reason. They can grow very large and are very easy. You can also place it outside for the summer if you like!
Pilea Peperomia
If you’re looking for a beginner-friendly plant that can fit on a shelf, Pirae Peperomia is for you. This living room plant has round leaves that look like coins and has acquired a commonly known name, China’s money plant. It thrives in indirect light and requires minimal watering. Win! It’s a truly adorable plant and I’m currently convinced of myself what I need on a coffee table.
Whether this list will inspire you or perhaps feel a little daunting, start small and choose plants that will bring you joy. Meet the plant care requirements before having fun! Living room plants not only enhance the aesthetics of your space, but also make your home feel more lively.
