In preparation for the holiday season, I would like to reshare my 2023 post about family travel. If you want to know more, Toby also shared his own tips for surviving family vacations. Here are my personal tips for enjoying large family gatherings. good luck! Soxo
After 13 years of family travel, I finally understood the key to having fun (or at least how to put it into words). We anticipate some difficult times.
The key to traveling is that the maximum temperature can be high. However, the minimum price can be surprisingly low, especially if you’re traveling as a family. Some problems always arise. My flight will be delayed. Otherwise, you will get a terrible headache. Or the weather will be rainy. Or maybe your kids wake up at 2 a.m. and you find a hair in your salad. Honestly, that’s to be expected, right? Traveling is still normal life, and difficulties are not disasters, they are the norm.

Case in point: Last weekend, the boys and I drove to Connecticut to visit an old friend. We ate chicken sandwiches and played table tennis. We floated on our backs in the pool. we saw Alexander and the Terrible, Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. we drank chilled white wine there small italian glass. I’ve thought this over a dozen times. “This is what life is all about.”
But at the same time, not everything was idyllic. During the three-hour drive, the boys argued. I got misophonic and told them to be quiet or I’ll turn this car around so help me. There was a large spider in the bathroom of our Airbnb. We dropped our basketball into a thorny bush. There was heavy traffic on the way home.
Bottom line: The trip was messy in parts and epic in others. Both can be true.
Here are some snapshots from our travels over the years.

Yawning through Austin’s wonderful Laguna Gloria.

Obtained a “Plus 4” card during a Uno game in San Diego.

It doesn’t feel like a San Francisco beach.

I’m tired of walking around Italy.

Hungry in the UK.

Florida is too hot.

I’m leaving on a 10 hour flight.
The other day, my friend Andy reflected on a family trip with one sentence that sums it all up. “It was the worst, but then it was the best.”
Additionally, there are two legendary posts that always make me laugh.
* Is it a vacation or a trip? Helpful guide for parents
* Mother takes care of all household chores and spends vacation on the beach near the sea
what about you? What’s the most hilariously unfortunate thing that’s happened to you while traveling? Have you ever had a trip that was absolutely terrible? It can happen! After all, we strive for wholeness.
PS An ode to the worst family vacations, and the weirdest and best parts of them.
