Super Easy Funnel Cake – A Beautiful Mess

Funnel cakes are essential when it comes to theme parks and county fair IMOs. I love it! Traditionally, it is made by pouring batter into hot oil through a funnel and quickly frying the cake. I believe it is somewhat regional for the US region, but I’m honestly not sure because it’s a staple of many childhood memories for me. 🙂

Making homemade funnel cakes is very easy. Very similar to a pancake batter. Basically, it’s fried pancakes!

material

  • Pancake mix
  • water
  • Vanilla extract
  • Oil – Canola or Vegetables
  • Powdered sugar, also known as sweet sugar

How to make funnel cake

Mix the pancake mix and water. Add it to a squeeze bottle or pour it into the funnel.

Heat the oil to 350°F or higher. Next, pour the batter and create a spider web-type shape. Wait 20-30 seconds, flip, then fry for another 15-20 seconds. Move to a bed of paper towels to remove any excess oil.

Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes and tips

  • I tried pancake mixes purchased from three different stores. The one that worked best was Biskick.
  • In the process of testing some mixes, I learned that it is all about batter textures. If your batter is very convulsive, it won’t hold together nicely when you go to fry it so that you can drink it through the straw. Thick paste consistency is required.
  • I like to make 2-3 bite-sized funnel cakes because they are easy to operate with hot oils. However, you can use this same recipe and make funnel cakes of large sizes like fairs if you wish.
  • It works best when pouring batter into a squeeze bottle (as shown in the photo above) rather than a funnel. This gives me a little more control when I work.

Note

You also need enough canola or vegetable oil to float the cake while frying. This is 1-2 cups depending on the size pot/Dutch oven.
