Snowball cookie ingredients:

  • all-purpose flour
  • pecans (or other nuts)
  • butter
  • salt
  • vanilla essence
  • Powdered sugar (caster sugar)

direction:

There are three main steps to a successful Snowball cookie. First, roast the nuts to bring out their full flavor. Next, make and bake cookies.

Finally, roll the still-warm cookies in powdered sugar to create a snowball effect and melt-in-your-mouth flavor. I like to roll it once, and after it’s all rolled, I roll it again to maximize the snow effect.

Tips for making:

  • Nuts – I love pecans, but sometimes I make snowball cookies with walnuts or other nuts. It’s up to your preference (or if allergies are an issue). Whichever nuts you use, be sure to toast them well before chopping them.
  • Roll each piece of dough into 2-3 cookie pieces. These don’t bake for long, so you don’t necessarily need extra-large cookies.
  • Roll the snowball cookies in powdered sugar while still warm, then roll again. The first layer will melt to some extent (a good thing!), but you’ll need a second layer to achieve the snowy look.

Offering suggestion – coffee!

Snowball cookies go well with hot drinks such as coffee or tea (see our favorite herbal tea-Tastes like Red Hot Candy!).

FAQ

FAQ

Why did my snowball cookies fall flat?

Snowball cookies should not fall flat. The main thing to check is to chill the dough before baking, as it does not contain leavening agents.

Can snowball cookie dough be frozen?

yes. Form the dough into balls and freeze them to bake later. Once baked, sprinkle with powdered sugar and roll into balls.

Are snowball cookies the same as Italian wedding cookies?

It’s a very similar cookie. Italian wedding cookies are sometimes made with a variety of nuts (such as almonds) and are sometimes formed into a crescent shape before baking.
