It’s that time of year again, so I’m excited to share the recipe for McDonald’s Copy Cat Shamrock Shake!LOL. Personally, the Shamrock Shake is one of my favorites. I love the flavor of mint in general. We do a lot of small cooking and craft projects at home with my boys around little holidays like St. Patrick’s Day, so it’s best to have a homemade shamrock shake recipe on hand.
You can also dress it up with crushed Oreos or Lucky Charms marshmallows. Or, for a more adult version, add a shot or two of espresso. I often make it with my kids, and I actually use green food coloring (lol). But if you want a more subtle color or no color at all, it’s easy to adjust.

How to make shamrock shake
Measuring ice cream is a little difficult. I use a glass measuring cup, but to be honest, you can also just add eye amounts to the blender. Think about using too much or too little to make a thick milkshake.
Add ice cream, milk, extract, and green food coloring to a blender. Blend until well combined.
Pour into cups and top with whipped cream.

Tips Notes + Alternatives
- I like to use Blue Bunny Soft Vanilla Flavored Frozen Dairy Dessert in this recipe, but you can use any vanilla ice cream. We tend to buy this type, as the texture is softer and the final milkshake is a bit more airy/foamy, making it feel even more like the McDonald’s version to me.
- Mint extract is more authentic for this recipe, but if you already have peppermint extract (perhaps made from Christmas candy), that’s fine too. Both make great shamrock shakes, although the flavors are slightly different.
- To get the vibrant colors you see in these photos, I used 10 drops of green food coloring. If you want a more subtle color or want to skip food coloring altogether, use less.
- You can make your own whipped cream or use the canned version for a more authentic copycat experience.

- If you want to make it dairy-free, you can use dairy-free ice cream, milk, or whipped cream.
- these cup with dome lid Great for parties, but otherwise a 12 oz cup will suffice.
