Pumpkin Pasties – A Beautiful Mess

We are Harry Potter fans and love making storybook recipes for our kids. This pumpkin pastry is delicious and easy to make at home. Pumpkin pastries are similar to pumpkin hand pies or pop tarts. You will love eating them warm with a cold butterbeer or pumpkin juice.

In the Harry Potter story, students can purchase pumpkin pie from the snack cart while riding the Hogwarts Express. This recipe was inspired by a treat we tried at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios. Try making these delicious little hand pies for your next Harry Potter movie night.

material

  • Pie crust – Choose pre-rolled, refrigerated pie dough instead of the ones that come in pie plates, or you can make your own homemade pie dough.
  • Pumpkin puree – Canned is fine too (just make sure it’s pumpkin puree and not pumpkin pie filling).
  • Honey – or your favorite sweetener.
  • vanilla – Choose a high-quality vanilla extract.
  • cinnamon – Ground cinnamon.
  • cloves – Ground cloves.
  • nutmeg – Ground nutmeg.
  • salt – A pinch of good quality salt (I like to use flaky sea salt).
  • egg – For the egg wash you will need 1 egg.
  • milk – For washing eggs.
  • brown sugar – For sprinkles on top (optional).

How to make it

First, preheat your oven to 400°F.

Spread the dough on a nonstick baking sheet or parchment paper. Cut circles into the dough. Biscuit cutterUse the mouth of a small bowl or large glass to cut into circles.

Place 1-2 spoonfuls of filling in the center of each circle. Fold the circles over to seal the filling. Dab edges of dough with water to seal.

Use a fork to fold the edges of the dough along the outer edge.

Mix the egg and milk to make an egg wash. Use a clean brush to spread the mixture onto the surface until it forms a paste.

Bake in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes until golden brown.

Allow the pasties to cool for 5 minutes before serving warm. Enjoy!

Tips on how to make it

  • A savory version – If you want a savory pumpkin pie, use less pie filling and add a bit of brie, cream cheese, or mascarpone cheese. I haven’t tried this, but if you have, please let me know what you think!
  • Pumpkin Pie Spice – You can also substitute pumpkin spice for the three spices if you have it on hand. Adding ginger and allspice will give it a very similar taste.
  • Garnish – I decorated my pasties with little stars, you could use lightning bolts or leave them out, or you could sprinkle some brown sugar, turbinado sugar, or decorative sprinkles on top.
  • Recycling of scrap – If you have scraps of pastry, use a rolling pin to roll out the dough again.
