For today’s review, I present you with a relatively new yet established skincare brand based in Brazil. It is extremely popular in local markets and is loved by its friendly prices, effective materials and wide range of availability. There is no drugstore in my city that does not carry principals to shelves.
About Principia
Principia, a Dermatocosmetics brand based in Sao Paulo, Brazil, distinguishes between its diverse skin types and budgets through its commitment to affordable prices and clear formulations. Their understated marketing and minimalist packaging contributes to their accessible appeal and avoids rising prices. In a Vogue article, I described Principia as a “normal Brazilian analogue,” but I think this comparison is reductive. Principia stands as an original brand and deserves recognition that it deserves its unique approach.
Principia formulations are built on the basis of well-studied, clinically proven ingredients without unnecessary fillers or scents. Core components often include activity like niacinamide, known for its sebum regulation and improved skin texture, and various forms of hyaluronic acid where hydration is important. Alpha and beta hydroxy acids (AHAS/BHA) such as glycolic acid and salicylic acid are frequently incorporated to address concerns such as exfoliation and acne and hyperpigmentation.
Principia prioritizes these key ingredients, clearly states their focus, and helps consumers understand and select products tailored to their specific needs.
package:
For today’s roundup/review, we chose three different products at Principia: facial serum RN-0,3 containing retinol and vitamin E, gel GL-01 cleansed with salicylic acid and glycerin, and exfoliating toner AL-7 containing lactic acid and salicic acid.
The packaging is very simple and convenient. Brown glass bottle, dripants for serum, large plastic bottle with pump for cleanser, small plastic bottle with handy cover for toner. Everything is simple and has a clear ingredient list. Instead of a name, there are several markers that can help you “tag” the active ingredient.
Ingredients, textures, scent:
Principiasérum RN-0,3
For the past few years, I have consistently incorporated retinol into my daily skincare routine. After Dr. Shelley Naidris focused on consistency around efficacy, I prioritize the regular use of commercial retinol. So for me, a smooth, gentle, non-bright formula is essential.
Facial serum has a smooth, creamy texture. It’s silky, slightly milky and not trendy. It has a very subtle and almost unperceived scent. I think my dermatologist would approve it! Its active ingredients include 0.3% retinol and 0.5% vitamin E in the form of tocophyllyl acetate. Tocophyllyl acetate, a common ingredient in cosmetics and skin care, comes from acetic acid and tocopherol. It also contains sodium gluconate, a fumectant that helps keep the skin water.
Use Nigh’s Principia Retinola Serume for clean and SRY skin. It is best to use a moisturizer as induced after 30 minutes to 1 hour of retinol serum can cause it to dry out very much on the skin. The consistent use of retinol is key to good results for visible skin results.
Principia Gel de Limpeza GL-01
I’ve always wanted to add salicylic acid to my skincare routine. And I don’t just use it to wash my face. Add it to shampoo and shower gel as an additional non-mechanical exfoliating agent. It has a soap and clear texture with a slight mint scent. When applied to the skin it feels very refreshing!
The cleansing gel contains 13% Tensuccib. It acts as a mediator between water and oily contamination that accumulates in the skin. By destroying natural surface tension, they mix oil and water, effectively lifting the daily accumulation of sebum, makeup and environmental pollutants. Additionally, the gel has 2% salicylic acid, which effectively penetrates the skin and helps to remove those pores and remove old sebum. And finally, 5% glycerin soothes and softens the skin.
The gel texture is very mild, but I warn against overuse. The Principia website suggests that it can be used twice a day, but I feel it’s a bit too dry on my skin, so I use it a few times a week. It contains salicylic acid, and there is a risk of stripping off essential sebum skin. It also incorporates it into your body and hair care routine by mixing it with regular shower gel and shampoo.
Principia Tônico Al-7
And today’s final product: skin exfoliating toner. It looks and feels like water on your skin, clear and sunny with a slight acidic scent. When applied to the skin, it dries quickly without any burning or stinging sensations.
My experience
Over the past few months I have consistently used three Principia skincare products, and my skin has shown significant improvements. The only drawback I noticed is the slight dry feeling after using the cleansing gel. Therefore, I recommend using it sparingly and always following up with a moisturizer. Overall, my skin is very satisfying. In particular, I am grateful for the clear ingredient description and the wide range of products that Principia offers skincare enthusiasts.
Final Verdict…
Overall, I am very pleased with my experience testing Principia products. I’m planning to try more from the brand soon. Their ampoules in particular sound particularly interesting. Principia is recommended for those who appreciate clean beauty brands that avoid parabens, silicones and fragrances in their formulations. Brand commitment to cruel practices is also an important and positive aspect.
