I love the barbecue sauce. Yes, no, I love it. Therefore, this barbecue chicken recipe really highlights this love. This is also a very simple, simple and quick way to make BBQ chicken. I’m from Missouri and love slowly roasted charcoal barbecue, and certainly sucking all kinds of meat (though brisket probably always has my heart), but this recipe isn’t one of them. This is all kinds of chicken parts covered in barbecue sauce and baked in the oven.
This recipe can be made in under 30 minutes (depending on the type of chicken you are using), but there are suggestions to spice it out! First, if you want to make your own homemade BBQ sauce, do it. However, you can also use the ones you buy to jazz a little.

- Chicken – If you first freeze and thaw
- BBQ sauce
- Worcestershire sauce
- Honey
- Salt in seasoning – I like rauri
I like to use skin-on chicken in this recipe, but I can use skinless if I want. There is no significant difference in the process.
It is also highly recommended to cover the baking sheet with aluminum foil for easy cleanup.

How to make barbecue chicken
If you are using frozen chicken, thaw first. Season the chicken pieces with salted seasoning and place on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil.
In a small bowl, stir together the sauce ingredients: barbecue sauce, Worcestershire sauce, honey. Pour this onto the chicken.
Bake at 425°F for a total of 25-30 minutes (for drumsticks). Every 8-10 minutes, remove the pan from the oven, flip or spin the chicken (I use tongs on this), and brush again with sauce. The chicken should reach 165°F internally upon completion. I usually stop baking when I reach 160° and then bake for 2-3 minutes at the end, getting some crispy bits.
Let the chicken rest in a pot for a few minutes before serving.
Time to grill various chicken
- Chicken breast: 14-18 minutes
- Chicken Wings: 40-42 minutes
- Chicken thighs: 16-18 minutes
- Chicken bids: 15-16 minutes
- Overall chicken: 70-80 minutes (for 3.5-4 lb chicken)
Bake times vary as not all chicken cuts are universal. The best way to check is to use a meat thermometer and make sure the thickest part of the cut (not hitting the bone) reaches 165°F when it is complete.

Tips and notes
- I keep the seasoning simple, but I can also add more salt or more to the salt before baking, or use rubbing on the chicken. Try garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, or paprika.
- As you can see here, there are many ways to liven up your store-bought BBQ sauce. Other things may be considered, such as maple syrup, soy sauce, molasses, peach jam, or hot sauces like frank or sriracha.
- I like to serve barbecues with ranch dressing and celery. Wet wipes are also available when offering handheld pieces like drumsticks and wings.
