Orange Chicken Sauce – A Beautiful Mess

The orange chicken is similar to sweet and sour chicken. It is a sweet, flavorful sauce. The base of the sauce is orange juice, but there are many other ingredients that balance the sweetness and flavor.

Many of the weekday dinners we make at our home are pretty basic. Use rice or pasta to make some protein (meat or plant-based). So I like to have an easy way to change the flavor of this. And then there’s this recipe for orange chicken sauce.

This orange chicken sauce can be served on grilled chicken, fried chicken, or air fryer chicken. You can fill your meal by adding steamed rice, fried rice, or cauliflower rice.

Orange Chicken Sauce Ingredients:

  • olive oil
  • ginger
  • Garlic
  • Orange juice + skin
  • Granular white sugar
  • Rice vinegar
  • soy sauce
  • Corn Starch
  • Red chili pepper flakes

direction:

Cook the chopped ginger and garlic in olive oil over medium/high heat. Next, add the orange juice, crust, sugar, rice vinegar and soy sauce. Beat until the sugar is dissolved. Stir in the red chili pepper flakes.

In a small bowl or glass, stir the cornstarch with 1 tablespoon of water. This creates a thick slurry mixture. Slowly pour into the sauce and stir in the same way as you do.

Continue cooking until the sauce is thick. If necessary, add some soy sauce or red chili flakes.

Tips and Alternatives:

  • Honey can be replaced with granulated white sugar if desired.
  • If you don’t have rice vinegar, you can use white vinegar instead.
  • The sauce is like gravy. Because if you haven’t thickened as much as you want after adding cornstarch, keep cooking with a little heat. However, take note as it can get thicker soon.
  • The orange chicken sauce can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for up to a week.

Provide suggestions:

  • You can use this Springfield-style cashew cauliflower recipe to replace this orange chicken sauce with a vegetarian-friendly option.
  • When I cook rice, I always use it Rice cooker It’s very easy and you can concentrate on making chicken and sauce while the rice cooker is doing that.
  • I like to add some chopped green onions just before adding them on top of this sauce.
