Is there anything better than a classic margarita? This recipe is made with just four ingredients and tastes better than most restaurant margaritas.
A few years ago, I introduced you to homemade margarita mixes, and if you’re using store-bought mixes, I highly recommend you give them a try (they’re even tastier). Today I’m excited to share the best margarita recipe from scratch.

margarita ingredients
- tequila blanco – Also called silver tequila.
- orange liqueur – You can use Cointreau, Grand Marnier, or triple sec.
- lime juice – Freshly squeezed lime juice is a must.
- agave syrup – For natural sweetness.
- ice – I enjoy these small size square cube.
- lime slice – or lime wedges for garnish.
- course salt – Or homemade margarita salt to rim your glass.
There are some simple bar tools that will make your homemade margarita experience easier and faster. Recommended handheld citrus squeezer, Measuring shot glasses (I use this for almost every cocktail I make) cocktail shaker.
How to make the perfect margarita
First, start by preparing the glassware. I like to only salt half the glass, so people can choose to take a sip with or without salt.
then fill in cocktail shaker Contains tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, and agave. Add a handful of ice cubes and shake for about 15 seconds, or until shaker turns ice cubes. If you don’t have a cocktail shaker, try using a mason jar with a lid.
Take a quick taste test to see if you’re happy with your drink. You can add sweetener if desired.
Strain the drink from the shaker and pour into a glass with salt. please add some ice cubes Serve with fresh lime.
How to sprinkle salt on the rim of a glass
I use agave for salt attachment. This is because agave is a little more hearty and retains more salt than lime juice alone. Lime juice is also effective. When doing the salt rim, be sure to do it only on the outer edges to avoid unwanted salt falling into your drink. I like to keep some margarita salt It is on hand for just such an occasion. You can also make your own margarita salt (it’s fun!).

margarita variations
- mezcal margarita – My favorite margarita variation is to swap out the tequila in this traditional margarita for mezcal to create a smokier, more intense flavor.
- skinny margarita – For a lighter version, omit the orange liqueur and add a little fresh orange juice instead. You can also look for and use light agave.
- spicy margarita – Add a few slices of fresh jalepeno or serrano chiles before shaking. If you are concerned about spiciness, start with a small amount and add more to taste.
- Tajine Rim – use tagine seasoning (mix with salt or alone) to create customized rims. In this regard, you can customize the rim with your favorite herbs, citrus peels, flavored salts, and more.
- garden margarita – Add fresh edible flowers to create a beautiful garden-inspired margarita.
