Hooded eyes are a common and beautiful anatomical feature defined by a fold of skin that hangs down from the eyebrow bone, partially or sometimes completely covering the movable part of the upper eyelid when the eye is open. This overlapping skin creates a subtle “hood” that hides eyelid creases, making the eyelid space appear smaller or sunken. It is important to know that this is a normal change in eye shape and is often determined by genetics, but its effects can become more pronounced as the skin loses its elasticity with age.
Makeup poses a unique challenge, as a perfectly blended eyeshadow or eyeliner can disappear when your eyes open, but it’s this feature that gives your eyes a deep, mysterious, and even alluring look.
#5.Taylor Swift
Although it’s not always obvious (and it’s all thanks to some great makeup techniques), Taylor Swift is one of us girlies! She has hooded eyes and knows how to make it look even more seductive and beautiful. Check out her makeup look at the LA Premiere of the Years Concert Film. It’s the perfect combination of chic pin-up eyeliner, shades of blue, and coral red lipstick. Everything is on point without being boring. For those who are afraid of bright colors on hooded eyelids, this look can serve as an inspiration.
Anna Paquin wore a beautiful black smokey eye to the 12th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The cool thing about this look is that it uses false eyelashes. One trick to making hooded eyes look more “open” is to disguise them with long false eyelashes. However, it must be customized so that it blends naturally with your eyelashes. Cut in half or use cluster lashes to increase volume if desired.
Taylor looks great with a coral lip, but no one wears coral quite like Selena Gomez. Of course, we’re also talking about the eye makeup she wore at the SAG Awards. Can you guess what little tricks Hun Vango used to make her hooded eye shape look longer? First, the warm brown eyeshadow applied liberally on Selena’s eyelids matches well with her natural eye color and already emphasizes her eyes. The second is strategic placement of false eyelashes. Do you know how long the corner part is? This will lift your eyes and give them a siren eye look.
Most of her modeling photos feature professional makeup, so we had a lot of fun searching for the perfect example of Claudia. For today’s blog post, we have chosen the classic smokey eye look to show and explain how to perform a similar effect with hooded eyes.
The key to this look is proper priming and dramatic blending over natural creases. When blending dark eyeshadow, don’t be afraid to drag the color over your natural crease to create the illusion of larger eyelids. For a seamless blend, use a nude eyeshadow and a soft blending brush.
Another great example of utilizing a matte, nude eyeshadow color in the crease is Jodie Foster’s makeup look at the 2011 Cesar Awards. Unfortunately, we couldn’t see who did her makeup, but you can see a very soft, blended brown eyeshadow above the natural crease of her eyes. Curled eyelashes open up the eyes, brighten them and even help make them a little bigger.
And for dessert, check out Vanessa Paradis’ matte-on-matte makeup. Professional makeup artist and YouTuber Wayne Goss (highly recommend checking out his channel!) always emphasizes the importance of matte eyeshadow for hooded or adult eyes, as shimmer and shimmer can make skin look more dry and accentuate fine lines and wrinkles. Matte eyeshadows blend beautifully into your skin and give you more room for experimentation.
Let’s finish…
Whether you’re a fan of subtle “peek-a-boo” winged liner or gravity-defying full-cut creases, these 10 celebrity looks provide a masterclass in makeup for hooded eyes. The unifying principle behind all these stunning styles is simple. Focus your blending on the natural crease and always keep your eyes open to check your work. Now that you have the inspiration and techniques, it’s time to put some red carpet-worthy tricks into practice. Go ahead and give your hooded eyes the glamorous spotlight they deserve!
