I love all kinds of fried bread so this homemade hush puppie recipe is on my list. For the familiar case, hush puppies are small, fried, delicious bread bowls. Batters usually contain cornmeal. Think of it like a delicious donut hole or a small fried biscuit. This recipe is classic and simple. Anyone can make this Hushpuppy recipe.
Associate Hushpuppies Long John Silver. lol. So I usually think of Hushpuppies as a side dish of bread with seafood. Others believe it is usually popular in the South and comes from a Nun in New Orleans. They are tasty and are the best with a little butter and lemon juice IMO.

- Cornmeal
- All purpose flour
- salt
- baking powder
- baking soda
- Granular white sugar
- Onion powder
- Garlic powder
- egg
- Buttermilk
- water
You will also need oil to fry the Hushpuppy Batter. I usually use canola or vegetable oil for deep frying.


How to make Hushpuppies
In a medium-to-large mix bowl, stir together the dried ingredients, such as cornmeal, flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, onion powder, garlic powder, and sugar. Next, stir in the eggs, buttermilk and water.
Heat the oil to about 365°F in a large pot or Dutch oven. Use a cookie dough scoop to drop the batter into hot oil. Fry for 2-3 minutes, taking care to fried all sides in hot oil.
Move to a plate lined with paper towels. I use kitchen tongs for this. Continue cooking the batter until all the hush puppies are deep fryed.


Tips and notes
- You can add other ingredients such as spices and chopped fresh herbs to taste these classic hush puppies. Something like: green onion, coriander, parsley, or spices such as cumin, cayenne, ginger
- If you don’t have a cookie dough scoop, simply use a spoon.
- Hushpuppies are heated immediately after they are fried. You can re-strengthen it in the microwave or oven if necessary. But like a lot of deep fried food, the day it was made is the best.
- You can make the batter in advance and store it in an airtight container in the fridge until it is ready to use.
