Grasshopper Cocktail – A Beautiful Mess

The Grasshopper Cocktail is a deliciously creamy combination of mint and chocolate, making it a classic minty after-dinner drink. This drink’s bright green color (thanks to the crème de menthe) makes it perfect for Christmas holiday parties or St. Patrick’s Day, but it can actually be enjoyed any time of the year.

Grasshopper drinks are easy to make, so you’ll have a party cocktail ready in no time. Most recipes use equal amounts of crème de menthe and crème de cacao, but if you want to find the right balance to suit your tastes, play around with the cream percentages. Try Pink Squirrel for a cherry version of this drink!

The origins of the Grasshopper cocktail recipe are unclear, but the most famous story is that Philibert Guiché, owner of New Orleans eatery Two Hags, invented the drink for a 1918 New York City cocktail competition. (They won second place in the same competition). A 1907 cocktail book describes a drink layered with crème de menthe and crème de cacao, and Prohibition put the drink out of fashion for a time, but by the 1970s the drink was once again widely popular. FAQ

Can I use milk instead of cream for the grasshoppers?

Heavy cream creates the creamiest version of grasshopper, but in a pinch or if heavy cream is too thick for your taste, you can also use milk. Milk with a higher fat content (such as whole milk) creates a creamier drink than lower-fat milks such as skim milk or 1% milk.
