Fish sticks are a staple in our house (lol), so this homemade tartar sauce recipe comes in handy! This easy tartar sauce is perfect for all kinds of dishes, including fish tacos, salmon burgers, tuna cakes, and air fryer fish. Elevate your meals with homemade hushpuppies.
Tartar sauce is a creamy mayo-based sauce flavored with dill pickles (or relish) and some fresh herbs. I like the tartar sauce to be on the dipping side, so it’s not so thick that it’s scoopable. However, the great thing about making this yourself is that you can easily customize it to your liking.

How to make tartar sauce
Finely chop the parsley and dill. In a small to medium-sized mixing bowl, combine mayonnaise, relish, herbs, lemon juice, and sugar.
Leftover tartar sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for at least a week, sometimes longer. The longer you store the sauce, the deeper the flavor will become.

Notes and alternatives
- You can swap out regular mayonnaise, Miracle Whip, or another low-fat option if you like. If you want to make this vegan-friendly, use a vegan mayonnaise like Vegenaise.
- You can also use finely chopped dill pickles instead of dill relish. This will thicken the sauce and make it thicker.
- You can also swap out dill relish or sweet relish. In that case, it is best to omit the sugar, as it is not necessary to balance the taste.
- If you don’t have fresh lemon juice, you can use apple cider vinegar or white vinegar instead.
