When it comes to nostalgic autumn desserts, there’s nothing better than classic, easy apple crumbling. Warm and comfortable, it is the ultimate pairing of buttery, crunchy toppings and sweet spices. Add an ice cream scoop on top,Chef’s kiss– perfection.
Throwing quite a few crumbles together in my time, I thought it was time to share my ultimate apple crumble recipe. While I’m an ode to classics, I’ve taken a few steps to maximize the flavor and make this the tastiest apple crumble ever. Trust me, you will make this recipe for a long time throughout the season.

Simple apple crumble ingredients
- Apple. Granny Smith is full of my wishes. Their tart bites beautifully balance the sweetness of the crumble.
- lemon. Simply squeeze it brightens everything.
- spices. Splashes of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, vanilla… use what you have, but don’t skip them. They bring all the warmth.
- Maple syrup. It adds richness and a deeper sweetness that pairs perfectly with the apple.
- Brown sugar. A little bit for stuffing, a little bit for crumble.
- white sugar. Like classic chocolate chip cookies, the mix of brown and white sugar gives the crumble the perfect texture.
- Oats. The rolled oats add a simple, hearty crunch that I love.
- pecan. It’s completely optional, but you can’t resist the extra crunch.
- salt. Pinch makes all the flavors pop.
- butter. It will turn brown if possible. Take the flavor to another level.

Easy Apple Crumble, Step-by-Step
First off: turn the butter brown. You’ll find it ready from pops and bubbles to quiet and golden. Be careful not to burn. Let it cool completely, place in the fridge (or freezer) to solidify before adding it to the crumble toppings. Trust me, the flavor is unparalleled.
Next: Apple. I’ve tested this recipe in several ways. Chops, thin slices, thick wedges. winner? Thick wedges. They retain shape, bake softly, giving the best texture. That said, slice them to what you like – this crumble will taste good either way.
And now the star of the show: crumble topping. Basically, your favorite oatmeal cookies are disguised. Below it is a safty and chewy, crisp and crisp. It’s not too sweet, but perfectly balances the tangy, sweet apple and the combined scoop of ice cream you definitely want.
