You open the fridge to find a jar of relish that has been sitting there since the last time you cooked. It smells nice, but I don’t know how old it is. Does relish spoil?

Short answer: Yes, relish does go bad, but it is one of the most long-lasting seasonings on the market. Store-bought relish has a long shelf life if unopened, and once opened, it can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one year. Homemade relish is another story.

Does sweet relish last longer than dill?

Sweet and dill: no meaningful difference

This is one of the most frequently asked questions about relish storage, and the answer may surprise you. From a food safety perspective, sweet relish and dill relish have approximately the same shelf life. Both mainly use the acidity of vinegar as a preservative. Sweet relish also contains an additional preservative, sugar, but the difference in actual shelf life between commercial varieties is negligible.

Dill’s aromatic compounds are more volatile than sugar or the simple sweetness of cucumber, so an opened jar of dill relish can taste noticeably bland after a few months compared to sweet relish.
