Having a bold and dramatic design aesthetic may not be easy for some, but this year’s interior trends encourage us to add a little more playfulness to our homes. While creating a calm and peaceful space is important, there’s also a focus on homes that make a statement with personality and style. You can achieve both with one of this year’s biggest paint trends: color drenching.
We got our information about this bold design aesthetic from Sarah Stacey. Sarah Stacey Interior Designand Mark Schubert, founder and lead designer of . Philip Harrison InteriorsWhatever your design preferences, read on for expert tips on how to bring colour into your own home.
What is Color Drenching?
This moody, contemporary paint trend is all about enveloping yourself in one hue. “Color drenching is about covering an entire space with color, with minimal contrast and no white,” Stacey explains. “This approach involves applying color everywhere, from the walls and ceilings to the trim and furniture, to create a unified, calming feel.”
This year, monochromatic spaces are bursting with color. Think monochromatic. Everywhere. This look is far from boring. A colorful room incorporates a variety of textures, making the space inviting and comfortable. You can also incorporate different shades of the same color. A colorful room is, in a word, a great room.
How do you know which color to choose?
Filling a room with color isn’t just about loving a particular shade or tone. Before you choose a color to fill it with, decide how you want to feel in the space. “Consider starting with a rich, deep color, like a muted blue or a dramatic green, that resonates with the mood you want to create,” Schubert suggests. “Paint this color not only on the walls, but also on the ceilings, baseboards, doors, and even furniture. This uniformity will create a cocoon-like effect that envelops the space in color.”
Filling your office with vibrant colors like pink and orange is great for boosting creativity and energy. However, it’s a good idea to choose calming colors like blue and green for your bedroom. The restroom is a great place to experiment, so don’t be afraid to make bold choices. It also helps to know what furniture and décor items you want to use in your space. Choosing paint colors that work well with the items you want to incorporate will help create consistency in your design plan.
Colorful design tips
It may be daunting to not play it safe. If you’re thinking about trying this paint trend for yourself, remember that using lots of color can evoke different moods and emotions. It all depends on how you style your space. Here are some design tips from the pros.
Layer Shades and Textures
Just because an entire room is a monochromatic color doesn’t mean you can create a cohesive look by simply repainting all the walls. A well-designed room is made up of different layers, and Schubert suggests experimenting with different textures and finishes within the same color family. “For a cohesive look, try using mattes on the walls, gloss or satin finishes on the trim, and velvet on the furniture,” suggests Schubert. “Adding subtle contrasting accents with metallics or woodgrains can break up the monochromatic look without diluting the impact.”
He also suggests adding variation in tones of the same shade through accessories like cushions, rugs, artwork, etc. Once you’ve decided on a paint color, look for accents in slightly lighter and darker colors to give the space plenty of visual interest and balance.
Consider lighting
An important tip when painting a room is to know what kind of light will hit the space. Paint can magically change color depending on the time of day or the type of bulb you’re using in your lamps. Always try a paint sample before applying the color to see how it looks in the light.
“Lighting plays an important role,” says Schubert. “Choosing warm color temperatures for your lighting fixtures will make the space feel cozy and comfortable. Make sure the natural light blends with the colors you choose to add depth and dimension to the space.”
Use timeless patterns
Color-drenching is on trend right now, but there are ways to create a timeless space. “Choosing patterns and fabrics that will last, like gingham, checks, florals and stripes, will create a luxurious and timeless feel,” says Shubert. Stacey adds that while color-drenching is popular now, it’s not exactly new.
“Color drenching has been around for years, but it’s only recently seen a surge in popularity, so it’s finally got a name,” she says. “It’s nice to see the concept resonating with so many people.” If you’re still worried your home will go out of style, make it a smaller space, like a powder room or butler pantry, which will be easier to restyle than a kitchen or living room.
Bring in the black
Another way to add visual interest to a color-filled space is to add black accents. “Incorporating black elements adds depth and helps balance the room without making it too sappy,” Stacey says. “This strategy increases visual impact and creates a more refined, sophisticated design.”
It’s also worth mentioning that you can go for darker tones and use lots of colour too. Dark spaces make you feel more relaxed and at ease, so a bedroom or study with lots of colour is ideal. Navy, charcoal and even dark greens and burgundies are great choices.
Choose an accent color
While using too much color can make you feel overwhelmed by one color, Stacey suggests incorporating an accent color into your design plan. “While the trend is to use a limited color range, such as all-pink, I recommend layering two or three colors that complement a dominant, more saturated, ‘punchy’ hue to keep the feel fresh and timeless,” she says. “Used sparingly, this punchy color can add just the right amount of energy and interest to make a space feel special without overpowering it.”
