“Detroit is one of the places you can or don’t get,” says a restaurant critic Lyndsay C. Green. “My friend once said, ‘Detroit has a soul.’ It always stays with me. “Linsei’s husband grew up in Detroit and fell in love with Motor City while visiting his family. In 2017, the couple built a home in Detroit. She has since been widely written about the city’s food scene. Here, Lindday talks about the famous Chilean dog, the bar where dances spill down the streets, and what’s fun even when it’s frozen…

Our Guide, Lyndsay C. Green

Where to eat

The Detroit-style pizza is square and deep, but not Chicago deep. The sauce is on top of the cheese, but the cheese also goes beyond the sides to give this crispy, lace edge. Popular spots are jet and Buddy. Personally, I really like it Grandma Bob. (For vegans, It’s food Are there any Detroit-style vegan pizza pop-ups? )

All Detroit has their favorite branches of Coney Island, Two of the most famous – Lafayette and Americans – Both are over 100 years old and are next to each other. We go to Connie, a hot dog with chile, mustard and onion.

Baobab cuisine It’s a small, yet really good restaurant. They have been nominated for multiple James Beard Awards, but remain relatively affordable.

Here are some of my favorite desserts in Detroit: upright (Occasionally, I just go there for cookies and don’t even have a drink) Peach Cobbler Cookie Good cake and bakeand Red Hook Oatmeal raisin cookies.

One of Detroit’s most beloved bakeries, good cakes and baked peach cobbler cookies

Every year Detroit Free Press I’ll give a name to this year’s restaurant. That’s what the 2024 pick was like AlpinoThere are delicious fondue, homemade pasta and other dishes from the alpine region. It’s a high-end restaurant, but it still feels relaxed and comfortable. Mexican Restaurants Vecino It was our choice in 2025, and in 2023 Ladder 4a wine bar at a former fire station. In the summer, the chef will make the best sliders. I’m very happy to drink wine on the patio.

Where are you hanging?

Paramita Sound It’s a small, black owned bar and record store where DJs from Detroit and out of town play regularly. You will find there everyone has a drink out there doing a fuss. The dance spills down the street, which is very special and fun.

Many things people visit Detroit, like museums and restaurants, are fun, even when it’s really cold. Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) It’s a wonderful and huge museum. One of their big pieces is the “Detroit Industry” fresco by Mexican artist Diego Rivera, which covers four large walls. There’s nearby Charles H. Wright Museumfocusing on African American history. It’s really cool to have something like that in this city. And I’m waiting for my baby to be a little older Michigan Science Centervery popular with children.

Eastern Market It was over 100 years ago. I shop there for farmers’ produce and groceries, but it’s not just a market, it’s an experience. There are blueberry farmers that everyone knows, and there are pre-cooked foods like meat, cheese and pierogisu. There isn’t necessarily a seating area, but there are some small areas where you can pop squats. Also, Bad Marketplaceacross the street, grill out during the summer. So you can visit marketgo to Bart and eat hot sausages while listening to live music.

I’ll definitely go Bell Islewas originally designed by Frederick Lawormsted of Central Park fame. It’s an island on the Detroit River. Bicycles and boats. The oldest aquarium in America There is also free admission and free admission. Sometimes I love walking along the river. The views of the skyline are beautiful.

Two bookstores I love: Sauce Booksler and Next chapter book. If you want to relax, Vesper Books & Wine It’s also great, and it’s very close Periodicsa cool place for indie magazines.

Faircross boutique A good place nearby with colorful statement works Eugenie Curates sustainable apparel, shoes and gemstones. For vintage, I really like it Flamingo. Please check again Bad or Velvet Tower.

Eugenie

It’s always fun to jump in Sinora Detroit Canfield Store. There is a lovely coffee shop at the entrance so don’t leave empty-handed, even if you don’t leave with your new watch. Across the street, City Bird There is a cute selection of plants, children’s books, kitchenware and other trinkets. I always find myself there on vacation.

Where to stay

One style room at The Siren Hotel features bunk beds for “friends on an adventure” or “children with the parents of the hall.”

Corktown is the oldest region in Detroit. It’s really attractive. Check out the hotels there Trumble & Porter or Godfreywhere people stay when I take a baby shower.

Detroit also has many cool hotels with great in-house restaurants and bars. Cinola Hotel I have it San Morero, and Detroit Foundation HotelIt’s in the old fire station Equipment room. siren It’s very clean I sometimes work in the lobby when I’m downtown and they have Candy barone of Detroit’s more famous cocktail bars.

Thank you for sharing Detroit with us, lyndsay. There Detroit, what else would you add to the list?
