Butter cookies are a classic cookie, and I always think of the seasonal store-bought cookies that come in tins.
These are delicious, but this butter cookie recipe is less crunchy. A soft butter cookie. Think of butter cookies as the perfect combination between sugar cookies and shortbread.

How to make butter cookies:
Making these doughs is very easy. Mix the dry and wet ingredients separately and combine them. But the real “trick” to these is to freeze the dough before baking. There are several different ways to do this.
If you want simple, plain looking butter cookies, we recommend freezing the dough in log form. With this method, you simply slice the cookies from the log before baking.
If you want to shape or press your butter cookies like in these photos, do it before freezing. This method allows you to freeze it for 30 minutes or up to overnight before baking.
Tips for making butter cookies:
- The dough will be soft before freezing, so if you are rolling out the dough to make cutout shapes (like in these photos), be sure to use more flour than the recipe card says. This is to remove dust from the surface and rolling pin.
- i used cookie stamp to create a design.
- You can also use cookie press gun or cookie stamp roller to create a design.
- Another traditional method is to pipe the dough using a large pastry tip. This method is not recommended. Even if the dough is very soft, this method requires a lot of force. Maybe it works for some people, but I’ve never had success with this.

FAQ
Are butter cookies the same as shortbread?
They are very similar, so if you like one, you’ll probably enjoy the other. However, butter cookies are softer and have more sugar in their dough.
What is the best butter for cookies?
Recipes usually call for unsalted butter unless otherwise specified. This allows you to control the amount of salt added to the overall recipe.
Why are my butter cookies dry?
Dry cookies usually mean too much flour. Double-check your recipe to make sure you used the correct amount of flour.
