One of our biggest goals in renovating Zuma Beach House is to make it a place for family and friends to gather – a place to spend long weekends, summer vacations, and holidays with the people you love most. Additionally, the completed house has a relatively small footprint, so every inch can be used efficiently. Each room is designed with equal consideration for beauty and functionality.
In today’s post, we’ll be sharing our vision (and renderings) for a chic and clean bunk room – a space where the whole family can sleep comfortably while staying cohesive with the Japandi-inspired aesthetic of the rest of the house.
soft landing
This room may be small, but it’s one of the hardest working spaces in your home. Adam and I designed a simple, low-profile bunk bed system made from white oak with clean lines and a low-profile headboard. It’s structured enough to hold a book and lean on it without it feeling bulky or heavy. One set of berths consists of two twins stacked on top of each other. The other set has a queen in the lower berth and a twin in the upper berth, accommodating a total of 5 guests. Each bed has bronze wall sconce It adds soft light for reading, and the entire palette remains warm, textured, and natural.
The floor is Ingrid by Stugaa timeless neutral oak that adds quiet depth to your feet. continue to use Roman Clay from Portra Paints in Patagonia While maintaining a sense of unity with the rest of the house, the soft texture and subtle movements of the finish beautifully catch the light, creating a calm living feel.
Natural light floods the space from floor to ceiling marvin sliding doorIt opens onto a small private patio, creating a seamless flow between indoors and outdoors. As with any bedroom, controlling light is key. I have two layers of curtains grabber– Blackout panels for a restful night’s sleep and sheer linen curtains for soft, filtered light during the day. I’m still in the process of choosing the fabric, but I’ve listed my inspiration below so you can get a feel for it.
Fix it in the center of the room, Woven pendants from Lightology’s Woven collection. This is a sculptural statement piece that projects a beautiful organic shadow pattern across the wall. Natural fibers and hand-woven textures blend into the coastal palette, maintaining a relaxed mood while adding a touch of artistry.
Minimalist retreat: bunk bath
Just off the bunk bedroom is one of the smallest and most attractive bathrooms in the house. We wanted this room to have a calming feel, but with a few standout details that would make it memorable.
What we are using is duravit vanity Same as natural oak ME by Starck wall-mounted toilet I used it elsewhere in the house. Sleek, modern and beautifully designed. It proves that even the most practical items can take your space to the next level if you choose them carefully.
Beyond vanity, this sea glass pendant light Brings texture and warmth, Chico small arch mirror Add a sophisticated sculptural touch. A slim antique brass bar of mirrors suspends a minimalist arch, reflecting the home’s modern-meets-natural design language. Throughout, we use calista supplies Made of unlacquered brass, it has a timeless feel and is destined to develop a rich patina over time.
The design of the bathtub started with a very specific vision for the tiles that would cover the walls inside the bathtub. I wanted to create a terracotta pattern with a deep green insert in the center and the team imported clay We helped bring it to life with a custom tile pattern in warm, earthy tones. When I visited their studio in San Miguel de Allende, I was able to see the tiles being handmade. Once this small bathroom is installed, the details will make it incredibly special.
Calm, purposeful, and inviting
These rooms show that even the smallest space can feel special if all the elements are carefully selected. By keeping the design minimal and letting the materials speak for themselves, we hope our bunk bedrooms and baths feel like a soft landing for our guests. It’s a cozy, light-filled retreat that embodies Zuma Beach House’s philosophy of thoughtful design, natural textures, and effortless tranquility.
