Deciding what products you need for your face and neck to achieve that flawless look can be a challenge. From luxurious foundations to concealers to pore-blocking primers, the options can seem endless. But what if all you need is a lightweight, tinted moisturizer packed with skin-beneficial ingredients? We think BB creams are your skin’s best ally.

This all-in-one wonder provides a natural, healthy glow with built-in skincare benefits. Read this guide to find out everything you need to know about BB creams. From invention to the best application techniques. Simplify your routine and look your best.

What is BB Cream?

BB cream, also known as blemish balm or beauty balm, is a multi-purpose makeup product that combines skincare properties with the coverage of makeup. While traditional foundations can feel heavy and often focus solely on hiding imperfections, BB creams offer a lighter, more natural skin finish. Think of it as pigmented and hydrating skincare all in one package.

Classic BB creams typically offer hydration, sun protection and tint to minimize redness and minor blemishes while evening out skin tone, making this all-in-one product perfect for anyone looking to achieve radiant, healthy-looking skin quickly and easily.

  • When and how was BB cream invented?

The origins of BB cream date back to Germany in the 1950s. Dermatologist Dr. Kristin Schrammek She developed a cream to help patients recovering from facial procedures like peels and surgery. This early version offered a light camouflage effect that was gentler than a heavy foundation while soothing irritated skin.

Dr. Schrammek’s invention laid the foundation for BB cream to be embraced and widely used in the Korean beauty industry decades later in the 1980s. Korean actresses helped raise the profile of BB cream, and it quickly became a staple of Asian beauty routines before garnering global attention in the early 2010s.

  • Classic BB Cream Ingredients and Their Properties

By now, it’d be hard to find a makeup wearer who hasn’t heard of BB cream. In my opinion, this popularity is well deserved. Let’s take a closer look at some of the key ingredients in the classic beauty balm that work together to provide a lightweight, breathable formula that evens out skin tone.

Moisturizer: Glycerin and hyaluronic acid are highly popular moisturizing ingredients that keep skin plump and soft all day long.

Color pigments: Mineral pigments such as titanium dioxide and iron oxide even out skin tone and provide light to medium coverage to hide imperfections.

silicone: Dimethicone is a popular silicone that creates a smooth, velvety texture and helps BB cream blend seamlessly. It also has a slight blurring effect to help minimize the appearance of pores.

Sunscreen: Look for ones that contain ingredients like zinc oxide and octinoxate, which help protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

Soothing Ingredients: Aloe vera, centella, and chamomile extracts have a soothing and smoothing effect on the skin, making the BB cream a great choice for those with sensitive skin.

How to apply BB cream?

Of course, there are many ways to apply BB cream to your skin. But in my experience, some methods are more effective than others. Here are my favorite ways to apply BB cream for a smooth, even application.

First, prepare your skin. Start by cleansing and nourishing your face and neck. If your BB cream doesn’t contain SPF, apply it all over your face and neck at this stage. This step will help prevent your BB cream from looking patchy.

Once you’re ready, start by applying a small amount of BB cream to your skin. A warmer texture will absorb better into the skin. I like to apply it from the center of my face (forehead, nose, cheekbones, chin) to the sides and neck. Applying it in a circular motion helps it to penetrate the skin better, but it can leave streaks, so make sure to use a final movement to get rid of any streaks.

If you want more coverage, repeat the steps again, this time focusing on specific areas that need to be better camouflaged. This is also the time to apply concealer to any pesky pimples or blemishes.

For a more airbrushed finish, I like to use a damp beauty blender to remove excess cream and press the pigment into the skin. Gently flick it all over your face, blending smoothly, but make sure to use a clean beauty blender – you don’t want any extra bacteria.

If you like a dewy finish and your skin isn’t oily, you can stop at the third step, but for added benefits, add a touch of translucent powder to set the BB cream and reduce shine. Focus on areas that tend to get oily, like your T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin).

Why BB cream is better than foundation

Of course, everyone is different, especially when it comes to makeup and skincare, but I truly believe that BB cream is always a step ahead of any makeup foundation. If your skin is sensitive, dry, and prone to irritation and blemishes, you need a BB cream every day. Dermatologist Jusha Bhatia Sarin “BB creams are like tinted moisturizers and are great for people with dry skin or mild discoloration,” says Dr. Sarin. Not only will they leave your skin feeling smooth, but you’ll also be getting a cocktail of nourishing ingredients for your face and neck. Dr. Sarin continues, “BB creams also contain ingredients that provide sun protection and improve your complexion.”

Another major benefit is the natural, “skin-flattering” finish. While most foundations attempt to hide your skin’s natural texture and color, BB cream provides a lightweight, breathable layer that evens out your skin tone while allowing your natural beauty to shine.

Top 5 Best BB Creams for Dry Skin

#1. Elizavecca Milky Piggy BB Cream

Elizavecca BB Cream is an all-in-one BB cream that combines SPF 50+ moisturizing ingredients with a smooth texture. The only downside is that it only comes in one shade. If you’re lucky enough to have a similar skin tone, you’ll love it.

#2. Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing BB Gel

This cult-favorite BB cream combines the brand’s flagship moisturizer, Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+, with a hint of tint to help even out skin tone and give it a natural glow. Hyaluronic Acid hydrates and plumps skin, while Tiger Grass Extract soothes irritation.

#3. L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Radiant Serum BB Cream

This drugstore gem is packed with ingredients to fight dryness and signs of aging, including hyaluronic acid and vitamin E for intense hydration and SPF 50 to protect against harmful UV rays. Plus, it comes in a variety of shades to suit most skin tones.

#4. Maybelline Dreamfresh BB Cream 8in1

Precious Minerals has a super creamy, velvety texture that hydrates the skin with medium to high coverage. Just a few drops of this beauty balm are enough to cover the entire face with a light layer of pigment. But be careful when applying it, as it can end up being thick and cakey.
