Amaretto Sour – A Beautiful Mess
SHARE

Next time I’m looking for an easy, less seasoned dessert cocktail, I recommend the sour amaretto. There are two basic ways to make this classic cocktail. One is simple with only three ingredients, while the other is more modern, with egg whites added to the mix. Either way, I know you love these amaretto sour recipes just like I do!

If you’ve never had the sour amaretto before, this is what you can expect. Amaretto is an Italian liqueur and tastes like almonds and an an. This drink is on the sweeter side, but still balanced and not too boozy. It has a bright, refreshing flavor and makes it the perfect summer drink, but you can enjoy it all year round.

Amaretto’s sour ingredients

  • Amaretto liqueur
  • Simple syrup
  • Lemon juice
  • Cherries and oranges for decoration

Depending on what is available in the pantry, you can swap simple syrup and lemon juice for a homemade sour mix.

Sour Variations of Amaretto

This is a very popular drink with all kinds of fun additions/customization. Here are some ideas:

  • Use fruit-infused syrup, like orange simple syrup, to enhance the fresh flavor of your drink.
  • Add alcoholic flavors such as bourbon and whiskey.
  • Use plain club soda to add a bit of foam to your sprite or another lemon-lime-flavored soda, or to refill your cocktail and add a bit of foam. If you use a sprite, add it just before serving to prevent the soda from being flat.

I’ll try more cocktails

Modern Amaretto Sour – White Egg

The original Amaretto Sour was featured in the mid-1970s, but in 2021 he added bourbon and egg whites to create a more boozy and rich cocktail.

Cocktails made from egg whites usually have a foamy top. It is a staple of many vintage cocktails. And while consuming raw eggs is by no means completely safe, it has become a staple of many trendy cocktail menus.

Modern Amaretto’s sour ingredients

  • Amaretto liqueur
  • Bourbon – Recommended cast strength
  • Lemon juice
  • Simple syrup
  • Egg white

One egg white is about 1 ounce of liquid. You only need half an ounce for one meal, so it’s best to make this version two at a time. Perfect for parties.

The sourness of the amaretto; they are fun, sweet, tasty. cheers!

How to sour amaretto at home

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to your cocktail shaker except ice and garnish.

  • Shake the outside of the shaker until it becomes very cold in your hands.

  • Tension on a coup or ice with a glass of rock.

  • Decorate with cherry (or two) and an orange wedge.

Note

If necessary, create your own homemade sour mix and substitute lemon juice and simple syrup.
In modern versions it is best to add ice and then sway on a cocktail shaker from cold to drying the ingredients (no ice) for 10-15 seconds. This helps to better incorporate the egg whites and create that foamy top.
Each egg white is about 1 ounce, so you only need half the egg whites to fill one serving of the latest sour version of Amaretto. This makes for a great cocktail by shaking two at a time.
