The best way to enhance your cozy night at home is to use simple but special cocktails to set the mood. Whether you’re hanging out with close friends, spending a date night at home, or enjoying a self-care solo night, this refreshing grapefruit vodka cocktail is always welcome in our homes. Classically known as a greyhound – or a salty dog if you feel an adventurous spirit on a salty edge – this vibrant drink brings together the right balance of sweetness, tangs and sparkle.
One of the things that sets this grapefruit vodka cocktail apart is its versatility. I tweaked the classic recipe by adding a hint of agave syrup for sweetness and finishing it with grapefruit sparkling water to taste the extra foam and flavour. Perfect for enhancing weekday nights or making dinner parties feel special. Even without stress. Scroll through this simple recipe and my favorite tips and get a new go.
Greyhound vs. Salty Dog: What’s the difference?
Let’s break it down:
- Greyhound: Simply put, vodka and grapefruit juice are classics that are crisp, fresh and easy to take a sip.
- Salty dogs: A greyhound with a salted edge. Trust me, this little addition makes all the difference and enhances the sweetness and sourness of the drink.
- Italian Greyhound: Do you like something a little more refined? Add a Campari splash to deepen it.

My version is closest to salty dogs thanks to the delicious salted edges, but I add a bit of classic ratios and refill with a squeeze of agave syrup and a grapefruit-flavored sparkling water. I love the smoke this serves and it allows me to change the drink and make a low-alcoholic cocktail if I want to keep things light without sacrificing the flavor of delicious grapefruit.

How to Make a Salty Dog Cocktail in 3 Easy Steps
I’m not a fan of complicated home cocktails. I love the short material list and simple shake it up techniques. This cocktail recipe has both.
- First, salt the edges of your glasses. I like the appearance of the rims salted in half of the glass, and even so, drinkers can decide if they have a drink, with or without salt. To get this effect, all you have to do is take a wheel of lime or grapefruit, run the edge of the glass, and soak half of it in a small bowl filled with kosher salt.
- In the ice-filled cocktail shaker, two parts of grapefruit juice are reflected on one part of vodka and squeezed agave if necessary.
- Spread the strain on top of ice-filled glasses and enjoy the sparkling water of grapefruit. My favorite handdown is Rambler-Everyone in our home is obsessed with it. Garnish with grapefruit slices if necessary.

Tips for enhancing your cocktail
- Freshly squeezed juice It’s a game changer. Pink or ruby red grapefruit works beautifully.
- Adjust the sweetness with sweet things or omit them completely if you prefer a more sweet bite.
- High quality sparkling water like a rambler adds a parisiness to keep your drink light and refreshing.

How to make a mocktail
Grapefruit has a delicious, juicy flavor in itself, making it an amazing base for non-boring cocktails. If you want to make this drink without alcohol, replace it with a little lime juice instead of vodka or gin and add some grapefruit sparkling water. Throw rosemary twigs and mint for decoration to make it feel a little more special. Dive into it and it’s beautiful!
