Last week my 11 year old Anton, his friend Nick, and I was so excited to take a little bit of Florida keys…
A while ago, Alex each proposed to take the boys with him for a break in February, so we could enjoy a one-on-one time. He takes Toby to visit his family, and Anton asks him to go to Florida.
After determining the key to Florida and obsessively researching the hotel (do you all want a post about hotel selection? At this point we have developed a multifaceted strategy. Listen to your methods I want to), I’ve landed. Coconut Palm Inn At Key Largo.
The small Bayside hotel was a one-bedroom suite with a sofa bed, but there were not many sprugs. Ping Pong, Giant Jenga, Cornhole, Pool Toys, Motorcycles, Hammocks, Sunset Wine, Smore… You’re not staying in a super luxurious place – no site, for example, walking around restaurants and Long Beach, I love the small hotel that makes me feel like I’m home when I arrive. (Two nearby hotels that appear to have a similar atmosphere Atlantic Bay Resort and Caribbean Resort. )
The kayaks and paddle boats were kept near the water so they could always stand up and jump. We went on an adventure around the bay. Anton, Nick and I said, “This is life, everyone! Can you believe this?”
The hotel scene felt like summer camp and we became friends with another family. He gave us a clever mnemonic device that remembers their names. “Peanut butter and jelly sandwich,” Dad told me. “We’re from Peter, Bonnie, Jacob, Samuel.” How wonderful is it? Do you have it for your family? It makes me want to grasp one for the boy and me.
Other than swimming, riding a bike, and asking if they could drink more cola, the boys spent most of their days fishing. The hotel gave them frozen shrimp, rods and hooks, while other hotel guests provided pointers. I had no idea about fishing so I was happy to read on one of the Adirondack chairs on the pier My book.
They were booked afterwards so we only stayed for 2 nights, but we loved every minute.
After checking out, we drove south for an hour to the Florida Marathon and headed to our second hotel. On the way we stopped Aquarium encounters…
…where we can dodge baby crocodiles…
…and supply turtles, stintrays and tarpons. Don’t you like turtle patterns? They look like works of art (something like Serena Mitnik-Miller’s paintings).
Later that afternoon we checked in Isla Bella For the last two nights. There are 5 pools and daily activities like bingo and trivia, but I recommend it as a) extras (resortment fees, overnight parking fees, etc.) and b) and b) will be charged. There were rooms smaller than the ones I booked, but every time I called the front desk or stopped by, the manager said he was out or making important calls.
I felt like this guy, haha.
But of course it was okay (I just gave up), and the beach beautiful…
The boys played soccer for hours in the pool. We met a family in Dublin and I loved the mother’s phrase when she told me, “Your young man is fun.”
Most importantly, on a drive back to the airport, we passed the drive-thru and found the world’s longest French fries!!! The whole trip was a lot of fun. I wasn’t sure if it would be tiring to travel solo with two 11 year olds, but they are so amazing age and often together in the pool while I read and keep an eye on them. I’m playing. They also said I thanked and laughed at my stupid joke (or at least pronounced “LOL” and “Lohl.” Thank you, Florida – the sun’s silly during this long winter Thank you for the explosion!
what about you? Have you ever been to the Florida Keys? What kind of holiday spot do you like or fantasy? I want to hear…
