I love my Brooklyn home (the guest room above). I’ve lived here for almost eight years and know every nook and cranny. Very I’m in my 40s and I’m looking forward to autumn organizing my closets, clearing out storage space, and adding surprises and fun to my decor. Here are five ideas (I’d love to hear what design obsessions you’ve had lately!)…

1. Hang art in unexpected places. A framed painting under a window is lovely. I love seeing art hung high, low, around corners, etc…

2. Paint the stairs. For now, the stairs and hallway are white, which is fine, but just fine. Maybe I could paint the banister a pale pink or deep blue instead of going all out like the townhouse above.

3. Display the book cover. I had forgotten how nice it can look when you line up a few books from a bookshelf. This John Currin cover.

PS: I don’t have a window in my house that would fit this, but look how beautiful this bookshelf is!

4. Update your artwork. Two years ago I did a “fakeover” by moving two paintings into my living room and was amazed at how different the space looked. I also want to incorporate some work from up-and-coming artists and retailers. this and this and this and this.

5. Add brown. My friend’s favorite color is brown, and she says she’s always been teased about it. But now it’s her time to shine, because brown is in style this fall. fashion I’m thinking about incorporating brown into my interior. blanket? or pillow?
